First of all, I just want to give a huge thanks to the forum and all the members who have contributed to the wealth of information here; I have learned more about mattresses than I ever knew existed and look forward to putting my knowledge to (hopefully) good use. My wife and I have been mattress shopping for almost a year now without settling on anything. After trying all the local retailers, I still never found anything that seemed to fit our needs and I was beginning to despair until I found this forum.
Now, after spending almost a month reading and researching, I think we have made the choice to go with a Select Sleep 10" latex mattress from Sleep EZ. I have suffered from upper back, neck, and shoulder pain most of my life, and our current innerspring mattress is not helping the situation. I am 5’10 and 190lbp, while my wife is 5’1" and 140lbs. She does not suffer from notable back problems (though she does have a snoring problem), and she prefers a softer mattress while I have always gravitated towards a firmer one, possibly because that was what I have always assumed was the best choice for my back. The configuration that I am contemplating is:
First Layer (Top) Firmness Soft - Medium (Split)
First Layer (Top) Latex Talalay Blended
Second Layer Firmness Medium - Medium (Split)
Second Layer Latex 100% Natural Dunlop
Third Layer Firmness Firm - Firm (Split)
Third Layer Latex 100% Natural Dunlop
I just wanted to get some feedback on this from other members and see if I’m headed in the right direction before I pull the trigger. I have heard nothing but good things about Sleep EZ and their products/service, so I’m more concerned with getting the configuration right than making the actual purchase. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read and respond and, whatever happens, I will be sure to report back on how things work out.
As you probably know from your reading here SleepEZ is a member of this site which means that I think highly of them and that I believe that they compete well with the best in the industry in terms of their quality, value, service, knowledge, and transparency.
I’m assuming that you’ve spoken with SleepEZ and discussed your layering choices because when you can’t test a mattress in person then the most reliable source of guidance is always a more detailed phone conversation with a knowledgeable and experienced retailer or manufacturer that has your best interests at heart and who can help “talk you through” the specifics of their mattresses and the properties and “feel” of the materials they are using (fast or slow response, resilience, firmness etc) and the options they have available that may be the best “match” for you based on the information you provide them, any local testing you have done or mattresses you have slept on and liked or other mattresses you are considering that they are familiar with, and the “averages” of other customers that are similar to you. They will know more about “matching” their specific mattress designs and firmness levels to different body types, sleeping positions, and preferences (or to other mattresses that they are familiar with) than anyone else (including me or any of the other forum members here).
An online retailer or manufacturer will generally suggest a mattress that they believe has the best chance of success based on their knowledge and experience and the information you provide them because this is in both your own and their best interests but at the end of the day the only way to know for certain whether any specific mattress is a good match for you in terms of comfort, firmness, and PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and your own Personal preferences) will be based on your own careful testing or your own personal experience when you sleep on it.
Your initial layering choices certainly seem to be reasonable but as you know with a component mattress you also have the ability to fine tune the comfort and/or support of the mattress after a purchase either by rearranging layers or exchanging a layer just in case your initial choices don’t turn out as well as you hoped for and SleepEZ also has a good return policy if you are one of the rare exceptions that don’t seem to be able to find a layering combination that works well for you.
Assuming that you decide to pull the trigger … congratulations on your new mattress
I’m looking forward to any additional comments and feedback you have the chance to share once you’ve received it and have had the chance to sleep on it for a bit.
