Alternatives to the Plank Luxe Hybrid?

Good morning,

I am thankful I stumbled on this website and this is my first post. My wife and I sleep on a king size bed where we use 2 different twin xl mattresses. She likes a soft bed and has a Layla Sleep memory foam mattress that is approximately 11" tall.

I prefer a firm mattress. I start out on my back each night, and end up moving to my side a some point. I need/want a lot of lumbar support and prefer sleeping on top of the mattress. I have been through several mattresses over the past 10 years looking for the right one with no long-term success. Many of the foam mattresses start out okay, and end up not giving enough support over time which results in me tossing and turning and waking up with back pain and stiffness.

Back in February I bought the Plank Luxe Hybrid. The first 2 weeks my body had to adjust, but after that I was sleeping well. I did develop shoulder and hip pressure, so BB sent me their topper which worked out excellent. The problem? Width and height. Our king sized bed is a wooden structure that encases the mattresses. The mattresses sit on the base inside the bed frame. When I put the mattresses inside the frame as designed it would squeeze the sides of the PL causing deformity plus making the mattress more firm.

When I modified the slats to allow both mattresses to sit on top of the bed and not in it - the mattresses were at a significantly different height which looked terrible.

So the comfort and support of the Plank Luxe fit me. I can’t modify my wife’s mattress because she likes it as is. I just need a mattress with same/similar support as the PL but within the specs of how wide a twin XL is supposed to be.

The plank luxe was 14" tall. I need a mattress that is 10" to no more than 12" tall. I don’t mind getting one that is too firm, because I can always add a topper later. The 2nd most important aspect of the mattress is it has to be in spec width wise.

I slept on the firm side of the Plank Luxe not the Extra firm. Also, about 5 years ago I had the regular foam plank mattress and didn’t like it - that would have been the next logical step but is a no go.

Right now I’m sleeping on a borrowed twin on the King sized frame until this is solved and waking up every day with back pain and stiffness.

Thank you in advance for your help!

The original plank firm is 10" tall and less expensive than the plank luxe. The plank luxe is 12" tall. It’s surprising that the width was out of spec.

Here is a twin XL avocado green which is medium-firm, not as firm as the plank luxe but still a sleep on top type of bed: Avocado | Green | 11'' Twin XL Mattress – HandUp Mattress

Hey there rookie7,

Take a look at the diamond rock 2.0, it is 12" and a good alternative to the plank luxe. I would give @yawnder a call and speak with them about the Diamond.
I am not 100% clear on why the plank luxe twin xl is not working for you, unless it is the height with the topper, but you can always fix that with a twin xl mattress foundations terra bunkie under her side to raise her side up 1.75" or the big fig low profile at 2" under her side.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the input. I have already returned the plank luxe back in June. The problem was more the width than the height due to it not fitting down inside our bed. We have had a king before and it fit easily. Maybe the one I had was slightly out of spec.

I did modify the base and slats to accommodate the difference in height. Again, it was the width so maybe the mattress was a little “fatter” than it should have been - other mattresses have worked.

I’ve looked at the engineered sleep mattresses as well. Any input? Thanks

Engineered sleep make an excellent mattress. Are you looking at the today or classic. Quality product.

Leaning towards the classic hybrid extra firm.

I really like the today mattress by them, it’s medium-firm.

What I’m curious about is, are you sure you like a hard surface? Or are you trying to make sure your mattress is very supportive? Because you said the soft topper made your plank luxe feel perfect, and that made me wonder if maybe something with a strong base layer and a softer pressure relief layer might work out better

But also a bed like the plank luxe with a topper would last a long time because the topper protects what’s inside the mattress.

Another very firm option is the Palmpring Colva mattress. The Colva is coir (coconut husk) and natural latex. The Colva is 10" and in our experience sized correctly. It gives very firm support and most of our customers add a wool or latex topper to it.

Good question that I cannot answer 100%. When I was in my 20’s and younger before marriage I used to sleep on my stomach a lot. Back then I liked a very firm mattress. Fast forward to today and I always start out on my back and end up on my sides sometime in the night. When I had the plank luxe during the trial period I woke up a few times where I had moved to my stomach. I did get pressure on my hips and shoulders without their topper. However, I think shoulder pressure has more to do with pillow height and construction for me than the mattress itself - I have broad shoulders.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will give it a look.

I think you might actually like something like this: Queen Hybrid Latex Mattress | Zoned Coil | Natural Latex , Ultimate Hybrid Latex Mattress | Zoned Coil | Natural Latex

It uses the combizone coil which is 8.5/10 firmness, and with a medium layer of latex you would still get some conformity while staying on top of the bed, and total height is 12".

The difference between talalay and Dunlop is that Dunlop is a little more solid, so it feels a little more firm. But latex is very good at making sure you don’t sink in far.

It seems like the main thing you want to make sure of is that if you lay on your stomach you won’t be hammocking.
