An introduction, getting my second foam mattress.

I ran across this forum while shopping for a new mattress and it impressed me as informative and impartial. I’m not new to foam mattresses. I inherited a couple of twin xl adjustable beds from my mother and made them into one king bed. It soon became apparent that the miserable coil mattresses needed replacing and I decided to go foam. I’ve noticed the DIY terminology used in this forum and that’s exactly what I did, initially ordering one medium density 6" twin xl Larkspur mattress from foamorder.com (3" standard support, 3" latex), which seemed nice, but followed that order with the same mattress in firm density for the other side of the bed, which I liked even better. I wanted to see if a memory foam topper would enhance the experience, and I liked the combination of the Larkspur with a 3" 4 lb. memory foam and consequently ordered a matching topper for the other side of the bed in 5.3 lb., which I liked most of all with the firm density Larkspur. It would appear I favor a firmer mattress.

That was back in 2002. I never made frequent use of the bed’s adjustable feature until I developed acid reflux. A few weeks ago, one of the beds stopped functioning, frozen in an elevated shape. I disposed of it, l leaving only one twin xl bed, very much like sleeping in a college dormitory. I decided to get a new queen bed and use a foam wedge with a fixed frame instead of an adjustable bed. On Saturday, I ordered a 9" Roma Natural Latex from Sleep EZ., already scheduled for Friday delivery (pretty darn good turnaround time I think). The Roma mattress, medium on one side, firm on the other, should offer a decent amount of flexibility as far as firmness, but if it still doesn’t feel exactly right, I can always add a topper in latex or memory foam to fine tune my sleeping experience. I guess you could say I’m still, as you guys say, DIYing it.

Hi ChuckW,

Thanks for taking the time to share your comments and experiences in such detail … I appreciate it!

Congratulations on your new mattress as well

As you know I think you made a great quality/value choice and I’m looking forward to your feedback once you’ve received it and have had the chance to sleep on it for a bit.

Phoenix

I’ve had the Roma queen size for a month now. I installed it on one of these frames.

With a shipping weight of 120 lbs., it was heavier than I anticipated. The UPS driver was relived that my condo was on the first floor. I made certain to unwrap the mattress only after it was positioned atop the frame. The Roma has dual densities, firm on one side and plush on the other. I set it up on firm, Considering the weight of the mattress, if I ever decide to experiment with the plush side, I’ll need another strong back to help me flip it., but it seems very comfortable.

I salvaged the 3" of latex from my two old twin xl mattresses. They were fairly firm when new back in 2002, but have softened somewhat over the years, so I figure that with a little trimming, it could make a comfortable topper. Slicing about 16" lengthwisen off one the twin xl pieces makes a decent queen size topper. If it softens up more in another year or two, I may end up getting another topper.

Since I’m prone to acid reflux, I wanted something to elevate my head, so I ordered one of these wedges.

After a few nights, felt discomfort on the wedge, partly because it makes me feel like I’m sliding toward the foot of the bed and partly because the foam is substandard to that of the mattress. Stacking up good quality latex pillows seems to be a better alternative.
