Hello, my wife and I currently have a 9-year-old Sleep Number that we have both grown to dislike. At first it felt great, but after a few years we just couldn’t get comfortable anymore. After researching and trying out new mattresses we decided we’re getting a latex. We tried some out at a local retailer and found one we liked in the store, but it’s a brand we can’t find much about online. The owner had us try out different latex beds without telling us which type of latex (Dunlop vs Talalay) each one had, and of course we both ended up liking one of the more expensive ones that was all Talalay. It’s a Therapedic Pure Touch, and the specs sheet in the store say it has a base layer of 6" Talalay, a 3" layer of medium Talalay, and a top layer of 4" graphite plush Talalay with an organic cotton cover coated with wool.
The price for this Pure Touch out the door is $3,000 for a king, while the spec sheet says it has an MSRP of $5,299 (I know, way too high). This store also carries Pure Talalay Bliss, which is obviously more expensive, and she said it’s hard for her to get those in stock because of COVID (not sure how true this is, but it is what it is).
Anyway, does anyone here have any experience with this brand and/or model? If so, does $3k sound like a reasonable price? I know there are options online for less, but I like to support local businesses if I can, and the owner of this store had great customer service. We actually did place an order for one, but it’s about 3 weeks out so we have some time to change our minds if need be.
I’ve also been doing some more research and am really intrigued by SleepEZ. They seem to be of great quality and I like the fact that I can choose a different layer combination than my wife. She tends to like a more plush feel, while I generally like it a little firmer. It’s also $500 cheaper than the Pure Touch, but again, if it’s good quality I don’t mind supporting the local shop.

There are few things more frustrating than disliking your bed, as poor sleep affects all aspects of an individual’s quality of life. Congrats to you both for making the decision to move forward and find a mattress that is more suitable for your needs! Good work also to you both for making store visits and testing potential candidates as that is the best way for understanding how different components feel and react to your individual preferences. Question for you: what Sleep Number are you replacing and what are the things that you didn’t like it? Was there anything in its initial comfort feel that you did like?
Therapedic licenses its brands to a variety of manufacturers, creating a number of spec changes in their lines for differentiation among competitors. Which retailer did you visit and which version of PureTouch did you like? Do you have a copy of the spec sheet or did you take a snap of it for reference? Don’t get too hung up on MSRP pricing as mattresses are seldom sold at “suggested” retailer’s prices. For example, there is a Talalay/ Dunlop version in King called the Mist Mattress by PureTouch that retails for $2,699 online. As far as the Pure Talalay Bliss stocking goes, I believe that their Talalay sourcing has changed and that could play into longer availability times. Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic has broken many supply chains and slowed manufacturing of many processes down, so until the spread of the virus is leveled, uncertainty in production times will remain.

$3,000 for an all Talalay mattress is pretty close to what you may expect to find at retail, as a king-sized/ all Talalay mattress can be quite pricey depending on other variables such as the cover fabrication, the amount of latex in the layers and sourcing of the latex itself. It’s wonderful that you prefer to support local small businesses if you are able to as they are a valuable part of your community’s livelihood. Hello, thanks so much for the detailed response! I honestly can’t recall what Sleep Number model we have. It was purchased in 2012 and was something like their “Anniversary” version or something. As for comfort, I’m assuming the foam comfort layer on top has worn out over time, and now it really just feels like we’re on an air mattress. I’m a fairly large dude (6’4", 235 lbs), so I am compressing the bladder no matter what setting it’s on and I end up tossing and turning all night. My wife says she’s also waking up uncomfortable during the night.
The retailer is Sherri’s Mattresses in Milwaukie, OR (Portland area) and the model is the “Harmony”. I’ve attached a pic of the spec sheet from the store. I see the top layer is “graphite infused”, which I understand isn’t necessarily good or bad vs 100% Talalay, is that true?

Yes; unfortunately over time, high BMI individuals may find compressions happen more quickly in the comfort layers as materials and components become softer as they break down over use and time (especially under the heavier parts of the body such as the hips/pelvis). This is why the durability of the upper comfort and transition layers (the top 3" to 6" of the mattress) are especially important when you are assessing the durability and useful life of the mattress as a whole. As you are both at a point where the mattress is serving merely as an “air mattress”, it’s definitely time to retire your Sleep Number for a more comforting, supportive and suitable mattress.
A manufacturer’s choice of graphite infused Talalay latex vs. 100% Talalay is more about the “story” that they are supporting in the mattress line and in the case of the PureTouch Harmony, their product knowledge card states that this is a “luxury latex mattress”. Talalay Global, the manufacturer of graphite infused talalay, offers this as a specialty category of talalay latex, and likely why the manufacturer chose it to differentiate their PureTouch Harmony as a “luxury” latex mattress. Generally speaking, Talalay latex in all of its forms provides the most comforting, plush “uplifting” feel, higher durability/ longer lasting support and natural air circulation/ temperature regulating properties of all mattress materials, and its higher price tag reflects these qualities. I did look Sherri’s Mattresses up online, but there were no details regarding the Harmony model for further review. What would be interesting to know is whether the 6" support core is zoned in any manner, that isn’t mentioned in the product card details of the snap you provided but it could make a difference in the support the mattress provides your higher BMI profile over time.
With your new Harmony on the way, are you still considering Sleep EZ as a mattress purchase candidate?
