Are there duties on mattesses made in Canada and shipped to the US?

I live in Chicago, Illinois and am considering buying a hybrid mattress from Hamuq in Canada. Does anyone know if I will be charged duty when it crosses the border?

Hi danclark,

Welcome to our Mattress Forum!

There have been many changes to the Tariff Schedule over the last few years, as well as the changes in NAFTA. In general, Mattresses are considered under chapter 94 of HS 9404.21, which was at 3% in 2020. A revised 2022 of Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States Revision 11 here reveals no changes for Canadian-made mattresses with the same 3% as before – This would be calculated based on price without shipping, of the mattress. For the latest updates, you can always visit the US CBP (Customs and Border Protection) Attached is the pdf directly from their website.

The minimum threshold for import tax is $800 USD. Articles valued below that are not subject to duty. Here is a quick overview of the importing process

For those interested in importing a mattress from the US to Canada there are some good posts from MFC and Mattrebuild from January 2022 in terms of customs duties in this thread on US mattresses for Canadian Shoppers

I hope this is helpful

Thanks Phoenix for the reply and for the attachment. Very helpful! I went to the websites you linked and saw that one said that if you owe duty, CBP will contact you. I can’t seem to find any information on how they would contact me and if they would hold the item at the border until they receive the money? Do you or anyone else on here know the process? According to Hamuq I can have the mattress here in a couple of days which is great as I have guests coming soon but if it gets delayed because of customs I might have to consider a local option instead.

Hi danclark,

From my experience it’s the shipping company (Fedex, UPS, Canada post) that collects the duties on behalf of the Canadian government and remits it to them. If your mattress was shipped by freight, then the broker that clears the mattress at custom will contact you to collect duties.

I hope this helps

cheers

Hi danclark,

Adding more intel to the above info that Trusted Member and expert.MFC provided. Thanks, Mario for chiming in

I also would think they would contact you by phone or email depending on what info Humuq provides on their shipping/export form. If you have not seen this Info on CPB import/export …you can also visit CBPs Pay.gov and eCBP for payment transaction guidance. To cover all ends, you might also want to ask the folks at Humuq since they must have some experience with this since they ship to US

Also, another Trusted Member, CBH furniture in Canada, manufactures and sells mattresses and custom wood frame beds. They also ship to the US and Hendrick mentioned on Friday that they use a brokerage firm for exports, and the brokerage firm would contact the buyer if a tariff was owed, just for an example. Since it sounds a bit time-sensitive, you can also ask Humuq if they handle exports through a brokerage as well. I hope it all works out for you and your guests.
