Hi dssxxxx,

These types of mattresses (layers and layers of cheap soft polyfoam) are a body impression and foam breakdown waiting to happen.

I highly recommend reading the tutorial post here before going too much further in your mattress research.

Post #3 here about hotel mattresses would also be worth reading.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix,

Just found your website whilst trying to identify the sealy mattress we slept on at Vdara in Las Vegas earlier this week. It was a great mattress to sleep on, but now reading your website, I can see that its long term future might not be as sound as we thought. We are looking for a new CA King.

I am 6"2 190 lb and my wife is 5’10 155lb and both are side sleepers. Back support is very important for my wife. We live in Knoxville Tennessee. Is there a smaller high quality manufacturer in our region your can suggest?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cheers…ianT

Hi ianlturner,

I’m glad you found us before pulling the trigger because you have clearly identified the issues connected with the use of lower density polyfoams in the comfort layers of a mattress. they can feel great in a showroom (or a hotel) but they don’t last as long as higher quality materials.

The better options I’m aware of in the Knoxville, TN area are in post #2 here

Phoenix

What a great service. HUGE Thanks to Phoenix.

Hi Phoenix,

I found your site because I too was searching for the exact type of bed the queen Aria bed is, at the hotel in la Vegas.

I see the resources you have recommended reading. And while I understand the intention is not to overwhelm, I just can’t seem to find the time to be able to read through and fully absorb all that you have shared.

Like the original poster, my wife and I absolutely loafed the Aria bed, so my question for you is if you can shorten the research and share what you would recommend personally as a comparable be do? Do you know from the little information that the aria at home website shares about their Sealy Posturepedic Queensized bed?

One thing I’m definitely curious about is if we can get the same quality, or perhaps better, for less money. I imagine the $2,195 price for the queen bed is a premium both for the aria itself as well as for the name brand sealy. So I’ll be very curious to know what you recommend as a good and comparable option. Again, I love the bed and don’t feel I need any mor research if I can just be told what bed feels the same.

Thank you!

Hi ElectricBlue26,

There is more about the different ways that one mattress can “match” another one in post #9 here but since they don’t provide the specifics of the layers and components in their mattress … and even if they did it’s unlikely that you would be able to find another mattress that was exactly the same anyway … the only way to know how closely another mattress will “match” the Aria for any specific person in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) will be based on your own careful testing or personal experience.

“Feel” is also very subjective and I would also be cautious using using a specific mattress as your “target” or reference point because it may not be the best possible match for you in the first place compared to other mattresses that you haven’t tried and you could end up excluding many other mattresses that may be different but could be a better choice in terms of PPP. Instead of using a specific mattress as a reference point I would rate every mattress you consider against a common set of criteria (rather than against another mattress) using the testing guidelines in the tutorial post and based on which one is the best “match” for you in terms of PPP and all the other parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you.

I would also keep in mind that like most mattresses made by the major manufacturers … the Aria uses some lower quality/density and less durable materials which can soften or break down prematurely so it would be a very risky choice anyway in terms of the durability and useful life of the mattress.

There is a shorter version of the mattress shopping tutorial at the end but I don’t make specific suggestions or recommendations for either a mattress, manufacturers/retailers, or materials because the first “rule” of mattress shopping is to always remember that you are the only one that can feel what you feel on a mattress and there are too many unknowns, variables, and personal preferences involved that are unique to each person to use a formula or for anyone to be able to predict or make a specific suggestion or recommendation about which mattress or combination of materials and components would be the best “match” for you in terms of “comfort” or PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) or how a mattress will “feel” to you based on specs (either yours or a mattress) or “theory at a distance” that can possibly be more accurate than your own careful testing (using the testing guidelines in step 4 of the tutorial) or your own personal sleeping experience (see mattress firmness/comfort levels in post #2 here).

I can certainly help you to narrow down your options, help you focus on better quality/value choices that are available to you either locally or online, help you identify any lower quality materials or weak links in a mattress you may be considering, act as a fact check, answer any specific questions you may have along the way that I am able to help with, and help with “how” to choose but only you can decide which specific mattress is the best match for you based on your own careful testing or personal experience and on all the parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you.

You can certainly find better quality mattresses that use more durable materials in lower budget ranges than the mattresses that are made by the major manufacturers and I would avoid mattresses made by the major manufacturers anyway (see the guidelines here). This would be especially true for hotel mattresses which are generally even more costly than similar mattresses that are made for consumers.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix,

We are now in Vegas looking for a property to rent and soon for a mattress.

I saw your Vegas recommendations (here: http://bit.ly/1OcSg8q) and it doesn’t look like there are the best options…

I know you link to places online (though I can’t seem to find where that is)…

My question then is this: if we are going to mattress places and testing them, finding what feels comfortable…

How do we communicate what that feeling is to find an equivalent mattress through one of the online places you recommend?

Furthermore, if we’re not even able to find the best quality long lasting mattresses here in Vegas, then how do we communicate and find one online?

Like I said early, we love the feel of the mattress at the Aria in Las Vegas… but we understand the materials used may not last long. The question becomes, how can we find one that feels the same, but that has a much better life span?

Thank you!

One other thing Phoenix…

On the Vegas Mattress recommendations thread (here), it seems like the only one you really recommended as a place to check out was this:

======
https://www.furnituremarkdowns.com/ They carry and focus mainly on Diamond mattress which is a California wholesale manufacturer who are also making some good quality/value mattresses. They don’t currently carry any of their latex models (only latex hybrids with latex/polyfoam and latex/innerspring) but they will be coming in about a couple of weeks. Knowledgeable and good to talk with.

The others I got the sense you weren’t too sure about…

The following four places you mentioned, but are you recommending them… and are these mattresses you mentioned ones you recommend?

=====
kayleesfamilymattress.com/ Las Vegas, NV. Pure Latex Bliss (latex mattresses), Englander, and Silver.

lvmattressworld.com/home.html (One Stop Furniture) Las Vegas, NV. Therapedic, Stress-O-Pedic. I talked with Gary here and he told me that they have the Stress-O-Pedic foam density information on their spec sheets.

https://www.yelp.com/biz/genesis-furniture-las-vegas Las Vegas, NV. No website but I talked to them and they carry Kingdom and Englander (no latex but gel memory foam). Make sure that they will provide you with the specs of their mattresses if you visit them.

https://www.yellowpages.com/north-las-vegas-nv/m...ar-furniture-2824480 Las Vegas, NV. Also no website but they also carry Kingdom and said they have some latex hybrids. As always make sure that you can find out the specifics of the materials in their mattresses if you visit them.

Thank you!

Hi ElectricBlue26,

I don’t specifically recommend any of the options on the Las Vegas list. While I do recommend the members here “as a group” because I believe that they compete well with the best in the industry in terms of their quality, value, service, knowledge, and transparency … I don’t make specific suggestions or recommendations for either a mattress, manufacturers/retailers, or combinations of materials or components the first “rule” of mattress shopping is to always remember that you are the only one that can feel what you feel on a mattress and there are too many unknowns, variables, and personal preferences involved that are unique to each person to use a formula or for anyone to be able to predict or make a specific suggestion or recommendation about which mattress or combination of materials and components or which type of mattress would be the best “match” for you in terms of “comfort” or PPP or how a mattress will “feel” to you or compare to another mattress based on specs (either yours or a mattress) or “theory at a distance” that can possibly be more accurate than your own careful testing (hopefully using the testing guidelines in step 4 of the tutorial)or your own personal sleeping experience (see mattress firmness/comfort levels in post #2 here).

There are also many other sources of good quality/value mattresses across the country as well that aren’t members of the site (at least yet) so the forum lists are only options or possibilities that can help you narrow down your choices avoid some of the worst choices in your area.

What I do recommend is a process of following the steps in the tutorial and there is also more about the 3 most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase in post #13 here which can help you make more meaningful quality/value comparisons between mattresses in terms of suitability (how well you will sleep), durability (how long you will sleep well), and the overall value of a mattress compared to your other finalists based on suitability, durability, and all the other parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you.

Phoenix

Thanks Phoenix!

We ended up going to Furniture Markdown in Las Vegas, which is one you wrote a bigger description about because you had called and spoken to the guy on the phone. I can confirm the guy seemed to be extremely knowledgeable about mattresses and very helpful. His explanations were very much in line with what I’ve seen you talk about in terms of being cautious of the name brands, and he made some comparisons on the materials inside the mattresses he was recommending, compared to what they are at the name brands…

We tried out a number of the beds here and they felt very good! It’s a bit of a toss up between two that have a $100 price difference… one technically has “more” of some sort of interior stuff (he was very specific but I don’t remember what was what), but even he reiterated going with personal preference and said that he often recommends the most inexpensive option of their mattresses (which is not one I took a spec image of).

Out of curiosity, could you tell me if the specs you see on the following two images are in line with some of the better quality materials you have mentioned around the site? In this case, know that we’ve hit the 3 PPPs for ourselves with the mattresses, and now we’re just wanting to cross reference with you that you don’t see any red flags:

I believe we will even be able to get 10-20% off the prices listed as well…

Thank you!

Unfortunately the links you posted are missing the most important information which is the type and density of the foam layers so it’s not possible to make any meaningful comments about the quality and durability of either mattress. If you can find out the information listed in this article (especially the form densities) and post it on the forum then I’d be happy to make some comments about the quality and durability of the materials and the mattress as a whole and let you know if I can see any obvious weak links in either mattress.

Phoenix

I just stay at their skysuite. The mattress was outstanding and very nice

Hi Matman,

Unfortunately you can also add “and uses low quality/density materials” to your comments as well. It may be great to sleep on for a few nights but it’s certainly not something that I would consider buying for longer term use.

Phoenix

Hey Phoenix,

I found out the rest of the specs for that mattress I mentioned… Here they are (what do you think?):

1 inch five zone convoluted foam layer
2 inches of embraced u foam layer
1 inch gel memory foam
1.5 comfort u foam layer
1" port u foam layer

Hi ElectricBlue,

Unfortunately the specs you listed are missing the most important information which is the density of each of the layers. The information they need to provide you is in this article and without knowing the type of foam and the density of each layer it’s not possible to make any meaningful comments about the quality and durability of the materials or identify any weak links in the mattress.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to copy or print the information in the article I linked and give it to them but if they are either unwilling or unable to provide you with the information you need to make an informed choice I would pass the mattress by.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix,

I copy and pasted numbers 1-5 as shown in your article and sent it to the Mattress Underground guy in Vegas. Here’s what he said… what are your thoughts now? Thanks!

=============
Hello Sean and thanks for contacting us again! First when we spoke the
two mattress’s you liked were mine, the first set and the last set in
the row. Neither of which have talalay latex. The coils are over a
thousand and pocketed. The foam density is 4lb and higher, going up to
6-8 lb I believe. But this information is their proprietary stuff that
they spend all of their money on and they try to keep is secret so that
the other companies can’t knock them off right away. My mattress has 2"
of the cool gel memory foam, along with multiple layers of other
proprietary foam and the micro coil system.
I’ve been doing this a long time and can tell you, more than anything
it’s how you feel on the mattress. The numbers tell you what’s in it,
not how it feels. Everyone that comes in here gravitates to one of
the models for a number of different reasons. I sell a model from
Diamond Mattress called the Rock, and it’s just that, hard as a rock,
but the people who have been raised on that mattress can’t sleep on
anything else. That’s why we shy away from telling people one model
is better than another based on price, they are all different and
designed for different sleepers. And my mattress came with a 10yr
NON-prorated warranty. Best warranty we have ever had with a mattress
company.
Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner, I was not aware you left a
message.

Hi ElectricBlue,

I can’t speak to how any mattress will feel or whether it will be a good match in terms of PPP for someone else but I can certainly speak to the quality and durability of the materials inside it.

To make any meaningful comments about the quality and durability of the materials though I would need to know the specific information I linked earlier.

While some information can legitimately be considered to be proprietary to a manufacturer … there are many manufacturers that claim that the information you would need to make an informed choice is also somehow “proprietary” but I certainly wouldn’t agree. You can read a little more about “so called” proprietary materials and using this as a justification for not disclosing what I would consider to be essential information here and here and here.

Without the specific information that you need to make an informed choice … you would be making a “blind” purchase which is certainly much more risky than I would advise and if a retailer isn’t able to provide you with the information you need because their factory won’t provide it to them then I would suggest to pass the mattress by.
