Thanks to this forum for connecting me with Ken from APM. We are 60ish short plus size people who have loved Beautyrest in the past. Our extra firm was causing hip pain after 10 years, so we started our mattress quest. We wanted at least something 2 sided or with replaceable components,we really like pocketed coils for the motion isolation and we hate the sinking-in of memory foam. This eventually led to researching DIY mattresses. Ken listened to our sleep styles and suggested the EcoSleep with 8" Bolsa coils with quantum edge (our height and side sleeping meant that zoned coils weren’t a great idea) covered with 3" of #32 firm talalay latex and their bamboo/wool cover.
The mattress arrived after about 2 weeks in 2 large boxes that were easy to fit up the stairs. Watching the coils inflate after we cut the shrink wrap was fun. The feel is quite different from our old BR which was an inch of foam over coils. The latex is much more wobbly. I was afraid it would be too soft for me, but while you can shove your hand into the latex, when you are lying on it, the support is very even. I can sleep in any position including on my stomach. After a week, I’ve gotten used to the feel of the latex layer. My husband is having less shoulder pain, both of us have happier hips, and I’m not waking up with numb hands. I love that if our preferences change, or if the top layer starts to wear out, we can order just that replacement part and not toss a whole mattress, like we just did with our old one.
