AuDHD, overwhelmed, and need help figuring out if I've made a mistake. Can you help me?

Of course, I’ve only found this community after buying a Sealy mattress. Just my luck haha.

Hello! I hope you are doing well. I have an issue I could really use your help with

I had been sleeping, quite comfortably I might add, on an old Posturepedic Crown Jewel made in late 1999. We had a leak in the wall, mold grew for years unnoticed, until my bed started making me sick; it had started growing mold. We’ve solved the moisture/mold issue in the wall, and I have spent the last 12+ months in pain from bad sleeping arrangements (couch, cot, air mattress, new mattress that was way too hard), so we finally bit the bullet and got me something that felt about how I remembered the old Crown Jewel feeling, a Posturepedic High Point (might’ve been high point 2 but I can’t remember right now).

I had read on reddit’s mattress community to avoid big brands and buy local. We tried that and the local store sold us a defective mattress that has given me so much pain (I sink down significantly in it over the course of the night, yet it is simultaneously far too firm and hurts my shoulders and hips quite a lot). I’m still trying to sort out the warranty but I am not optimistic.

So we went to sleep outfitters and the High Point in the store felt very close to the setup I had with the old Crown Jewel where I had a memory foam mattress topper on top of the mattress. Last night was my first night on the High Point and it is too firm and the foam stinks like they didn’t let it off-gas enough. It doesn’t feel like the one in the store did, it’s much more firm.

Then I find this community and y’all are saying that brands like Sealy don’t last long and I’m worried I’ve made a mistake.

However, I’m autistic and ADHD and having a hard time figuring out where to start because the amount of information available is overwhelming, so I was hoping someone could help guide me. Should I try to return this Sealy to Sleep Outfitters and buy local? How do I find a respectable local place to buy a mattress?

Can you help me? I will answer any questions and provide any additional information you need, I just want to finally resolve this so I can sleep comfortably again. I miss sleeping peacefully so badly.

Thank you for any help you can provide me!

It sounds like you’ve really been through the wringer, and I’m so sorry you’ve had to deal with all of that — the mold, the pain, the trial-and-error of sleeping surfaces, and now the stress of a new mattress not matching what you felt in the store. Anyone would be overwhelmed in your shoes, and you’re doing an amazing job trying to advocate for your comfort and health.

When it comes to the Sealy, don’t feel discouraged. Big-brand mattresses can vary a lot between showroom and home use, especially before they’ve had time to break in and fully off-gas. If it still doesn’t feel right after a few nights, returning it is absolutely a reasonable option. Most reputable retailers will work with you.

As far as finding a trustworthy place locally, look for smaller manufacturers who are transparent about exactly what’s inside the mattress — the foams, coil unit, densities, and certifications. Good makers love to talk about their build quality because they’re proud of it. This community is great for helping you vet options and avoid the “mystery meat” builds that don’t hold up.

I also want to mention one more angle to consider because comfort isn’t only about the mattress itself — it’s the foundation underneath it. A quality, supportive base can dramatically change how a mattress feels over time. And for many people dealing with long-term discomfort, sinus issues, GERD, breathing problems, or simply poor sleep quality, sleeping on a gentle incline has made a huge difference.

At Mattress Foundations, our mission is simple:
We want everyone to get the restorative, deep rest they deserve.

That’s why we build incline foundations and a full-body incline adjustable base designed specifically for healthy sleep positioning. Inclined sleep can help reduce pressure on the body, improve airflow, and take strain off the back and joints — benefits that matter no matter what mattress you choose. It might be worth exploring if you’re still searching for that “finally comfortable again” feeling you had with your old Crown Jewel setup.

If you ever want to understand how incline sleep works or how a quality foundation can change your sleep experience, I’m always happy to help guide you without pushing any product on you. You’ve struggled long enough — you deserve peaceful nights again.

You’re not alone here, and you absolutely can get back to sleeping comfortably. :crescent_moon::blue_heart:

Okay… after three cups of coffee this morning, I realized I completely skipped over the most important part — actually solving your mattress problem!

One thing that can save you so much frustration (and money) is choosing a company that builds mattresses with in-home adjustability. That means you can fine-tune the comfort and support layers yourself instead of being stuck with something that felt good for 10 minutes in a showroom but not for 8 hours overnight.

The brand I always recommend for this is SleepEZ. They’ve been doing this for over 50 years. You can call them and you will get a live person who will actually ask you multiple questions to get you the right mattress designed for you. They have a 95 percent rating the first try.
