Back Again on the Endless Search for Comfort

Some may have seen my previous posts. I was on a Tempurpedic for many years which was good for me and my wife, but then it started to sag. We ordered another one since they no longer made that model and it was not good. We ended up with a Flobed which worked out well for us for several years. Then I started getting hip pain and lower back pain. Tried all of the configurations and it still was not performing. So, I decided to try a Saatva. No so great. Tried latex and two kinds of Saatva foam toppers. Still no good. Went to a Tempurpedic Luxe Breeze Hybrid. Nice, but still hip pain and it was hard as a rock. Never softened. Then I was on to a Purple Rejunivate Plus. Not a good bed for me. Hip pain still there and hard to get used to. Now, I am on a Stearns & Foster Reserve Plush Pillow top. It was the most comfortable bed I had ever slept on…at first…but now the pillow top has worn in and it is hammocking and causing shoulder pain, which is new for me. Then a couple of nights ago severe upper back pain and then lower back pain.

I went back to the Flobed with a Saatva Graphite foam topper. It is okay but still not completely comfortable. Flobeds seems to be the best option for me, but really having a hard time dialing it in. I am thinking of getting their plush 3" topper to put on top, but it is expensive and I am at my wits end on this.

Any recommendations for those that have gone through this and perhaps from those that have been able to dial in their Flobed?

Thanks

Hey Wondo.

Wow, you’ve really been through it! It definitely sounds like you’re doing all the right things: staying tuned in to how each setup feels over time and giving things a fair shot, even when it’s frustrating.

Tagging @FloBeds here in case they have any insights, especially since you mentioned their bed has come closest to working for you. It makes sense you’re considering their 3" plush topper as it could be just enough to soften the surface feel and relieve that persistent hip pain without losing the support of the core layers underneath.

A couple of thoughts that might help:

  • If you’re still using the vZone system from Flobeds, have you tried softening just the hip section and keeping firmer support in the lumbar and shoulder zones? That can sometimes help avoid the “hammocking” effect while still easing pressure.
  • It could also be worth experimenting with a wool topper if you haven’t already as that would be something breathable but gently cushioning, especially if you’re sensitive to pressure buildup over time.
  • Also wondering if you’ve rotated your layers recently? Sometimes even latex can settle slightly, and a refresh can subtly shift how it feels.

Totally get the hesitation with another purchase…it adds up, and no one wants to gamble on another maybe. Hopefully others here (and Flobeds!) can chime in with any tweaks or success stories that might make the path clearer.

You’re definitely not alone in the “trial and error mattress maze.”
