We ordered Brooklyn Bedding’s Bamboo Bliss mattress firmness level 6. It is comfortable, but I am having a couple issues with it.
My husband is 185 lbs and sinks in quite a bit. This causes me to feel like I am sleeping on a slight slope (I am 103 lbs). In addition, the mattress feels slightly firmer on the edges. I don’t know if this is intentional (so you can sit on the side of the bed), but that makes the slope issue more pronounced.
I know you can get a king-sized mattress with dual zones, but a king size will not fit in our bedroom, so we went with queen. I am wondering if switching to a slightly firmer latex level, like a 5 or even a 3 would help with this issue. If I am alone on the bed, the 6 feels pretty nice, so I am concerned about going too firm, but I am having trouble adjusting to the slope feeling.
I’m hoping someone else had a similar experience and resolved it with a different topper!
This is a fairly typical issue with a couple that sleeps relatively close together that are different weights where the more concentrated weight of both of you in the middle would compress the latex more and create somewhat of a slope between you. The closer you sleep together the more likely this would be to happen. It would be more pronounced with softer comfort layers where he is sinking in much more than you are and would be less evident with firmer comfort layers.
You are the first one I’ve heard that has commented about firmer edges and as far as I know they don’t use firmer edges so I don’t know what could be the cause. It could be a more subjective side effect of the first issue where it feels like it’s firmer or possibly “higher” because the side closer to him is lower or it could also be connected with the initial breaking in and stretching of the cover which is usually a little taught at first and when you both sleep more in the middle it could be pulling the sides in somewhat and making the cover on the your side away from your husband feel a little tighter and firmer.
Thanks for the reply.
I think I will try swapping out the top for the next firmer level. It seems like it may be an awkward thing to ship, but they must have a system since it is in their policy. I wonder if the difference between a 6 and a 5 is notable. I had been sleeping on an older Beautyrest, but with a 3" memory foam topper and I liked that softer layer, so I hesitate to try a 3.
The feeling of firmness on the sides could partly be a break-in issue. I was away when the mattress arrived, and my husband slept on it (although only for a few days) while I was gone. About a week into using it, I started complaining about the sloping and firmer edge and he thought I was imagining things. I rotated the mattress 180 degrees, and then he noticed the firmness too, although he could sleep on anything, so it was not an issue.
I like the mattress more since we rotated it, and I have noticed I am most comfortable sleeping towards the edge. If I can keep that in mind, along with trying the firmer top, I can hopefully eliminate this issue. For a single sleeper, this mattress would be perfect.
Their exchange system is simple. They ship you the new top layer and then you just return the old one the same way after you receive it.
I would also make a point of talking with them because like all manufacturers they know more about their mattresses and the options they offer than anyone else. The degree of differences that people notice really depends on subjective perception. If someone compared a 5 side by side in real time with a 6 I think that most people (but perhaps not all) would notice a difference but if you compared them with a longer time in between them and didn’t have a more immediate frame of reference then “measuring” the difference would be a little more difficult.

As you mentioned … if rotating the mattress changes things then it points to being a break-in issue. It takes some time for a mattress to break in evenly. I would normally suggest sleeping on a mattress for a few weeks before considering an exchange because it can also take some time to adjust to a new sleeping system and at first we are all hyperaware of anything new that we sleep on but if things aren’t to your liking after a minimum of two weeks then I would certainly talk with them about an exchange.
It has only been 2 weeks, so we will probably give it a little more time. Nice to know the new topper arrives before the old one leaves, so we would still have a place to sleep. I would definitely discuss firmness options with the company before swapping. For now, I am just mulling this over and appreciate the helpful information.
We had some opportunities to sleep on our old mattress recently, which was moved to a summer cabin. The first time, after only having the new mattress for a few days, the old mattress felt like an old friend. But now after 2 weeks on the new mattress, the old one seems dreadfully uncomfortable. I am confident the new mattress will work out, after either further break-in, or a topper swap.
I’m updating my original post, now that our issue has been resolved. We swapped the #6 layer for a much firmer #3. The company makes the exchange very easy. The firmer layer did help with the sloping, but it was a little too firm for our taste.
First, I bought a cheap 2" foam topper to put on top. The bed was softer, but the sheets now fit very tightly, and we felt like we were sleeping on a drum. Finally, I removed the foam topper, and then unzipped and removed the latex layer. I replaced the latex with 2 and 1/2" of 3 lb. density foam , and now the bed is heavenly.
The 3" of latex went on top of our old worn-out Beautyrest spring mattress. I can’t say I would recommend a latex mattress to any couple that is of widely varying weight, - it is too bouncy and slopes, but the customer service at Brooklyn bedding was excellent. Luckily, the memory foam pad (which we already owned) fixed our problem.
I guess in retrospect you could also have switched the latex layer for one of their memory foam layers and turned the Bamboo bliss into a Bamboo Bella but then of course you wouldn’t have had a latex topper for your other mattress.
