Bella Sera, Naturepedic, vs. other less expensive brands

I’m not quite sure if I’m doing this right. The first time I posted on here, I believe I put it in the wrong spot. So thought I would put this post here. If that’s not okay, let me know please.

I’ve been reading through posts on here and feel like I will have a PhD in mattresses by the time I get done shopping for one. There is so much information to absorb. When I mention to people why I want more natural, they all think I’m crazy. They think all mattresses are made the same way. Which as we know isn’t true. I’ve been wanting latex for a while now.

I have decided against Aireloom for a few reasons. 1) The cost. 2) I’m looking for a mattress without a foam encasement. It seems pointless to pay for less of a mattress with foam encasement around the edges. 3) I want to be able to see inside my mattress to know the components I paid for are what they should be.

I have thought about just getting latex layers to replace the foam inside my select comfort mattress which is ancient. The air bladders are still in decent shape, and so is the mattress cover, but I’m not sure if air is the right thing for me. I am tiny and don’t weigh much (5’2” tall, 90lbs). I have read a little about the pros and cons of airbeds and someone told me with my size they might not work but I can’t remember why.

I recently traveled and checked out a few stores with Latex and think I’m in love. The first store I went to was Urban Mattress and tried the Camellia and the Taos. Both nice mattresses but the Camellia was a little on the firm side for me and the Taos had memory foam which I’m not a fan of.

Then I went to Naturepedic and tried a few different mattresses.

  1. EOS Organic Pillowtop in a Soft Latex-Soft Latex-Plush coil–amazing.
  2. EOS Organic Pillowtop in a Soft-Soft-Firm and it was good too. A little out of my price range though.
  3. Concerto Organic Pillowtop Plush feel which was also nice. Layers aren’t adjustable so if I didn’t like it, I would have to return or donate the whole mattress. latex, micro coils, encased coils with edge support. A little more affordable though.
  4. EOS Trilux soft-Medium-Firm Dunlop latex and it was a little too firm for me.
  5. EOS Trilux soft-soft-Medium Dunlop latex and it was nice. Cost in between Concerto and EOS pillowtop.

I didn’t bother laying on any of the Halcyon models as those are way out of my price range. But they looked lovely! One thing I like about the Naturepedic mattresses is the latex layers are wrapped in fabric.

But I still wanted to try Talalay, so I went to one more store called the Natural Sleep Store. Very small but wonderful experience and had 2 more mattresses I fell in love with. These are still a little more than I want to spend, but less than the Naturepedic. Tried the following:

  1. Sleep Suite Portfolio with Soft Talalay 3” top layer, 2” soft middle Dunlop layer, and 6” medium Dunlop bottom layer. That was a very nice mattress. No comfort guarantee but discounted layer purchases if necessary.

  2. Bella Sera Nove 3 with a wool topper and WOW! Also tried without, and it was still very comfortable. All Dunlop latex. There is also the option to do the Bella Sera Nove 3 Pillowtop with a Talalay pillowtop layer. 90-day comfort guarantee so can exchange one layer for free if necessary.

I do have to say there is a difference in latex depending on where you go. Or at least it seemed that way to me. And yes, I did like the Talalay latex but not sure if I liked it that much more than Dunlop to pay the added price for it. The all latex Naturepedic wasn’t as comfortable as the Bella Sera was to me and they are both Dunlop. I found that interesting and makes me leery of buying something offline that I haven’t tried yet. I would have to make sure I knew the ILD of the ones I liked and try to match those. Also I have read about the different mattress encasements and how they can make a difference in the feel of latex. I found that to be true as well. The thinner seemed to make the feel more pronounced and better but will they last as long?

So now that I know I can most likely do latex, I’m wondering if others have purchased any of these brands and have input they would care to share? Also, if you have suggestions of similar builds that may be less expensive. Or just other brands I may not have thought of as there are so many out there.

Thanks so much!

Hello Sophie28,

I sleep on a latex mattress myself and for full disclosure, I also work for The Clean Bedroom. We’ve been helping people find all-natural and organic mattresses for 20 years, including Naturepedic.

Not to muddy the waters, but if you are looking for an all-latex mattress that is customizable, our Healthy Choice line may be worth a look. I’d suggest the Flora or the Laurel - as the Flora has more layers and may feel plush to you, while the Laurel has a customizable base layer if you would like medium firmness on the bottom. The pricing would be similar to the Naturepedics you were looking at, or a little less.

All Healthy Choice mattresses:

Are made from organic latex, organic wool, organic cotton
Have zippered covers so you can see exactly what you are getting
Have individually wrapped layers

Browse our website a bit, and call us if you have any questions. Our experienced staff is used to working with people over the phone and can hopefully simplify this for you.

I would not rule out the Aireloom M1/M2 Firm/Plush (4 mattresses). Just get a king size. These mattresses are phenomenal. They have latex in their comfort layer. My personal favorite is the M1 Firm. Dont buy Aireloom from Macys due to cheaper quality.

I went to a Naturepedic showroom. I wasnt impressed. But some people love Naturepedic.

I find Aireloom mattresses to be quite comfortable within their sleep area atop the coils, most are priced in the mod to higher priced range as they are in the more luxury category of mattess genre.

However, their use of perimeter high-density foam encasement, which Sophie ruled out for that reason, was also a factor for me when I tested them while shopping for a new mattress.

It’s worth noting that while they may not suit everyone’s preferences, they still fall within the better/luxury category.

Ultimately, mattress choice comes down to individual criteria and personal preferences. Perimeter foam support encased designed mattresses do have their undeniable long term issues.l

Hi Katie,

Thank you for your reply. I have browsed your website in the past and loved some of the mattresses and that’s how I found Naturepedic actually. I will keep both of those mattresses in mind, although they are both a little more than I was hoping to spend. I would want to compare ILD’s of these with the mattresses I’ve tried because I am not close to a store to try your mattresses out unfortunately. And I know they can all feel different. Appreciate the response.

Hi John,

As nice as a king size mattress would be, I cannot fit a king size in my room or on my already purchased adjustable base. Plus, that would be even more expensive. I’ve already gone through the return of one mattress, and I’ve had a difficult time finding another, so I want to go with a place with a return policy or layer swap option. The only place I could do that with an Aireloom would be Denver Mattress. Their prices are way out of my budget. But I appreciate your enthusiasm for the Aireloom mattress.

Can I ask what it was you didn’t like about Naturepedic? These mattresses are also pricey as to why I’m searching for less expensive options. I would prefer to stay under $3,000 and unless it’s going to cure my restless leg issues, prefer not to pay over $3,500. I still need to eat and pay bills lol.

Thanks again!

Thank you Maverick, for reassuring me I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the perimeter high-density foam encasement. Until I really started researching mattresses and all their insides, I had no idea this was a thing. I am also somewhat of an edge sleeper at times, so that would be uncomfortable.

The Aireloom is indeed a luxury mattress and some absolutely may fall in love with it and be okay with the perimeter.

Can I ask if you found a similar mattress without perimeter encasement?
Thanks so much!

Sophie,

The Naturepedic? It felt ok, but instantly forgettable. Not bad, but not outstanding. I didnt feel like spending $5-7k for it.

A nationwide retailer that you might check out is King Koil. They have all talalay mattreses. Check out King Koil Brook and Genesis. They are phenomenal!!! Look on website for a retailer near you!

Hello again, Sophie28,
I wanted to mention that our Memorial Day Sale just started, which would bring a few models in our collection into your price range: The Naturepedic EOS, as well as the Healthy Choice Sage(both under $3K on sale) and Meadow (under $3.5k on sale) would all work, can be configured plush/soft - and they all offer a layer swap after purchase if you need to make it softer or firmer.
I wish you all the best in your search, wherever you find your ideal mattress! Call us if we can help.

Sophie,

Just because I didnt like Naturepedic doesnt mean you wont like it!

John

Yes that is very true! I did look for the King Koil mattresses but we don’t have any store here that carries that mattress. I think the closes state was CA and I’m not planning on going there anytime in the near future. Unless I’m not looking correctly. Sorry for the late reply. Had to put my mattress search on hold this last week as it was a crazy busy time for me.
