We are getting close to purchasing a Latex Hybrid (possibly Avocado Green Box Top) and adustable base. Looking for a mattress protector (waterproof?) that stays put when the bed is adjusted and doesn’t cause the sheets to come off. The bed will be a split-king. I’d like it to be organic, or at least all natural materials. Does anyone have an opinion on the Avocado waterproof protector? I’ve also looked at the DreamFit DreamCool version that is supposedly designed for use on adjustable base mattresses . . . with corner straps to help keep it in place. However, I don’t like that it is made in China. I’m thinking, if I can find a stretchy cover that fits well, I can add the corner straps. I welcome any suggestions, based on your experience with mattress protectors on an adustable base, specifically Latex.
Hi Suza,
When I bought my grandson (2 years old) his first mattress in January, my kids wanted natural and organic etc.etc. I ended up getting the Birch Kids Mattress, but they were out of their organic cotton mattress protector, so I ended up getting the Avocado,as they were quite similar. It uses two sides of organic cotton with a thin layer of polyurethane derived from cornstarch. @CozyPure Cozypure and @EuropeanSleep European Sleep Works, the @SuiteSleep Suite Sleep mattress protectors do not appear to be waterproof, but the skirt will handle up to an 18" mattress.
You can always get a thin wool naturally waterproof mattress pad like what Sheppards dream sells to place under the organic mattress protector if you want to skip the polyurethane layer. I believe @TheCleanBedroom offers naturepedic’s version of this as well. This wool mattress pad can be used in conjunction with something like the suitesleep mattress protector or European Sleep Works version, and should provide enough of a natural barrier to handle most any spill you might encounter.
This more air breathing method may prevent moisture build up in the mattress and potential mold or moisture building situation.
I will say having DreamFit sheets, and having used them on my MiL’s DLX mattress and the adjustable base, DreamFit will just not come off or need to be reposititoned when using their protector on your mattress. It is one of the most fantastic sheets and protectors out there. When it comes to staying securely on the mattress.
Hopefully, this gives you a head start on your mattress protector quest.

Good Morning Suza,
When it comes to mattress protectors, I think it is important to distinguish if you “need” it to be waterproof. Most adult sleepers do not need a waterproof protector unless there are children, pets, or medical reasons that require it. Protectors that are 100% waterproof, always have a plastic membrane and are almost always made in China. These typically minimize breathability and can be hot.
If you determine that you do not need waterproof protection, then the next thing to consider is whether or not you want to maintain the feel of the mattress or if you want to add a little padding.
In order to maintain the feel, a thick stretch organic cotton or lyocell (Tencel) fabric with deep pocket stretchy skirting is quite sufficient for regular protection. Both organic cotton and Tencel™ are breathable fibers. If your mattress had wool at its top layer of quilting batting then that layer will keep you cool and wick moisture.
If you’d like to add a moisture wicking layer of wool then a quilted mattress protector with organic cotton and wool are also excellent choices. This may, however, slightly change the feel of your mattress.
Good luck with your purchase, we hope you find the perfect protector for your new mattress!

Thank you . . . we certainly don’t need waterproof, and would like to maintain the feel of our mattress. Aside from protecting the mattress, we want a good fit, so we aren’t having to put it back on; I realize this is probably asking a lot for a mattress on an adjustable bed.
Thank you . . . good to hear there is something out there with promise. Bedding that doesn’t stay in place is a bother.
Hi Suza,
Given that information, you may want to check out our Suite Sleep Organic Cotton Knit Protector. It is offered by many of our retailers across the country, so you may be able to purchase it locally. It features a deep 18" pocket that is an organic cotton stretch knit and fits nice and snug.
Update: We’ve decided on an all natural latex mattress, 9" deep with an additional 3" Talalay topper. Still in need of guidance on mattress protectors. Looking for something that fits snuggly and doesn’t bunch up (we’ll have an adjustable base bed) to protect our investment. Must be machine washable, preferably cotton, and not interfere with the feel of the bed. It does not need to be waterproof (spill proof) but do want to protect the topper from body moisture. Should the protector cover the mattress and the topper, or just the topper. Finding a mattress protector is as challenging as deciding on the mattress!
But would it fit snuggly on a 9" mattress with an additional 3" Talalay topper?
Hello Suza,
Yes indeed it would fit nicely. The elastic is sturdy and covered, so it will cinch underneath making it a good fit. The stretch organic cotton in the skirting is very accommodating to many mattress depths.
Best,
Angela Owen
