My grandchildren managed to spill an entire liter of almond massage oil on my latex mattress. Is it in danger of breakdown and severe damage as a result?
thank you
Hi goom, and welcome to The Mattress Underground
Glad to have you here!
Ouch! Well, almond oil typically comes in 2 types: sweet and bitter…if the massage oil contains sweet almond oil, it can definitely damage latex, as some of the minerals contained can affect cohesion in latex layers. I would advise if possible, to contact the manufacturer and inquire. Also, the usual liquid damage control for latex: blot area, using mild detergent or isopropyl alcohol mixed with cold water, or baking soda can be used to absorb as much oil as possible, then air dry outside if possible.
Its difficult to say how much the oil will affect the latex without knowing the ingredients of the oil, and the type of latex…really any retailer that deals with latex mattresses would be a good source of info – I would hate to misinform you in case there are chemical processes here that I am not able to comment on. Sorry this happened! I certainly hope you can save the mattress!
Hi Basilio, do we have a list anywhere of oils/liquids that break down natural latex foam? That’d be a great resource for a sticky. I personally do not want to use a waterproof type of protector & we use a lot of pure cold pressed VCO for massage & skin/haircare, it washes easily out of cotton sheets, & pillowcases but I don’t want to damage the natural latex.
Hi Catia,
No we do not have a list like that right now - but that’s a great idea as Phoenix continues to update the site, I will pass this on!
