Big surprises when searching for a good mattress after reading the guide

Hi all,

I had many bad mattress purchases over the years and the current one especially gives us bad back in the morning, so I was very relieved when I found this website and its goldmine of information. I started to study the guide in details over a few days and then proceeded to try various mattresses in different shops, all local and owned by the manufacturer.

And it’s at this point that I got a few surprises. I worked out that a latex comfort layer with a support layer of pocket coils would probably be a good combo for us, but I wanted to try them since I’ve never tried latex before. In all the shops we went they all told us that latex (even natural) was popular about 10 years ago and now it has been surpassed since it had a few problems.

So anyway we’ve tried other offers, guided by the clerk which most of the time seemed really prepared, giving all the density and thickness and other details of all the mattresses we’ve tried. My second surprise was that the best one out of all of them was a full polyurethane mattress (with a memory foam layer in the middle), which I discarded initially. This is the website: MOON » Fedaflex (sorry it’s only in Italian).
It’s the only mattress where we don’t feel any particular pressure point, sleeping either face up or on the side. Incredibly comfortable. All the other ones we tried had memory foam on top, which we didn’t find particularly comfortable.

We are going back to try it again before deciding, but I would like to ask for your expert opinion about it as an additional input, especially on what would make that comfort layer so good (at least for us).
My wife and I are of similar build, about 175 cm tall and around 70 kg. We sleep mostly on the side because of sleep apnoea (currently in care with specialists).

Thank you so much!
Antonio

Hi Fresbeeplayer,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround and joining as a new MUGster.

Regarding your discovery of the MOON Fedaflex mattress, it’s interesting that a full polyurethane mattress with a memory foam layer in the middle stood out as the most comfortable for you both, especially considering your initial inclination towards latex and pocket coil combinations. Comfort is highly subjective, and what works best for one person or couple may not necessarily be the same for another.

Polyurethane foam mattresses, particularly those with memory foam layers, are known for their ability to contour to the body’s shape and provide pressure relief, which can be especially beneficial for side sleepers like yourselves. The memory foam layer likely contributes to the absence of pressure points and the overall comfort you’re experiencing.

Given your positive experience with the MOON Fedaflex mattress, it’s definitely worth revisiting it for further evaluation before making your final decision. Pay attention to how it supports your body, particularly in areas prone to pressure points like shoulders and hips when sleeping on your side. Also, consider factors such as motion isolation and temperature regulation, as these can affect overall sleep quality.

When testing the mattress, any mattress, you want to lie on it for at least 20-30 minutes. This offers the typical amount of time it takes one to settle in and fall asleep on their mattress. Even at 5’7 155, every body needs proper support, posture and alignment, pressure relief and overall comfort.

It is important to remember that a mattress is only as good as its weakest layer. Any mattress you choose should have their specifications listed for you to evaluate. When selecting memory foam, the more dense the better, more durable and long lasting it is said to be. Densities of 4 or 5lb is the minimum recommended. It is also important to note that there is a distinct difference between density and firmness. Synthetic foams can be made to varying densities independent of firmness levels.

Everyone will have different comfort levels and preferences. For the mattress to be a successful part of your sleep system, what feels good today must feel good 6, 12, 18 months down the road without fail. The integrity of the foams, their density and ability for long term durability is critical.

All this must be considered on your journey to land a mattress that will not only be comfortable for 30 minutes in the showroom, but for the long haul in your home.

If you are in Italy, I would recommend you look at this site for additional options and opinions of what is available in the Italian marketplace. I have ordered from these folks and had a couple of items shipped to American and found them to be extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

All they best,

Maverick
