It should be here in about 4 to 5 days, so we will see how it goes.
Phoenix,
I spoke to Shawn and he said go with what I tried and liked at the store and we can always trade layers later. So, I purchased the medium, soft, soft. Crossing my fingers I did the right thing.
I think the “rule” is that careful personal testing in a store always trumps any theory :).
He would probably mention a “caution” just to make sure that you were comfortable with your choice and make sure that you had done some good testing … but then your experience would of course be the most important guideline.
It’s tough to make a real “mistake” if you’ve done good testing and when you have a layer exchange as a backup … just in case. I’m also looking forward to hearing about how it sleeps for you.
Most important of all … congratulations on your new mattress
I actually called Shawn this morning and asked if it is too late to change out one of my layers. I realized, the spring mattress I sleep on right now is firm, and though I do have trouble with waking up several times a night, I don’t wake up in pain. I also noticed I slept a lot on my stomach last night. So, I called and asked if I can get either a medium, medium, soft configuration, or firm, medium soft configuration.
I said that, based on what I actually sleep on, I don’t think I should make a mattress purchase based on a few minutes in a showroom.
He said the mattress is scheduled to ship this morning, but if it hasn’t shipped they can do it.
Given what you know about these mattresses, and what I have said about my sleep style, what are your thoughts? I almost think I should go firm on the bottom, then medium and then soft.
UPdate: Shawn just called and the mattress hadn’t shipped yet. I changed to the firm, medium, soft. I am probably a nut bag, but I would rather have to add something soft to the top than not have enough support.

I don’t think Shawn thinks anyone is a “nut bag”. He’s probably one of the most calm and patient people that I know!
Your reasoning makes sense to me and your current layering would be more along the lines of the “averages” for you and would have less alignment risk but in the end it’s more likely that you will be telling us how it feels more than anyone can tell you
