Break-in period for memory foam

I purchased a Cirrus Luxe a few months ago and the first couple of weeks I had no issues, but lately I’ve had shoulder and elbow pain. Since I’ve never had issues before, I’m guessing my body is having trouble adjusting to memory foam. Is there a break-in period? Is there a way to expedite the break-in period? Has anyone out there experienced the same issue I’m having? Just looking for advice. By the way, I have no issues with the Select Foam or their product, I think it’s just my body getting used to the new mattress.

Hi Millenor,

You are certainly not alone in experiencing symptoms that are connected to the initial break in period or in getting used to a new sleeping surface.

The break in period for a mattress depends on the type of foam used and on the other components such as the cover materials and quilting as well. There is also an initial adjustment period for any new mattress and sleeping surface as your body “unlearns” it’s sleeping memory from the previous mattress and gets used to the new one. Both of these are usually 90 days or less but in most cases it’s less than 30.

How a mattress feels can also be affected by other factors as well (including the type of mattress protector you use along with any mattress pads or other bedding, the foundation you are using, your pillow, and in the case of memory foam the temperature of the room as well.

There is more about the break in and adjustment period for a new memory foam mattress in post #2 here but once you’ve checked for the other factors that may be affecting your mattress then the first suggestion I would make is to talk to the retailer or manufacturer (in this case Select Foam) because they may have some suggestions that are specific to their mattresses that can help.

I’m still struggling with my body adapting to the Cirrus Luxe I purchased in July. I’ve chatted with Peter at Select Foam and he assures me it will break in. I asked about maybe a topper to put over it in the meantime. I’m thinking if I’m having trouble adjusting to the memory foam, would a topper help, since it’s also memory foam? Your thoughts?

Hi Millenor,

You can read a little more about the break in period and the adjustment period for memory foam in post #2 here. In most cases the “break in” period and the adjustment period are around 90 days or less but higher density memory foam can take a little longer. Whether you should add a topper would depend on exactly what you are trying to achieve. If it’s a matter of needing some additional softness then it could help or if it’s a matter of changing the “feel” of the sleeping surface (by using a thin layer of wool, synthetic fibers, polyfoam, or latex etc that has a different “feel” than memory foam) a thin topper can also be effective but it would also change the response of the memory foam layers below the topper as well because memory foam responds to body heat and it would reduce the amount or heat that reaches the memory foam and its ability to contour to your body (thicker toppers would have more of an effect on this than thinner toppers).

If you are adjusting to the “feel” of memory foam itself then adding more memory foam probably wouldn’t help because the topper would be a similar material.

I would also make sure that you have eliminated some of the other possibilities that are mentioned in the post I linked (especially any mattress pad, mattress protector, or your sheets) as the source of any of your “issues”.
