Brookly Bedding Custom Modifications

My wife and I recently purchased the now discontinued Brooklyn Bedding Custom. We opted for the 3" Titanflex in medium firmness for the comfort layer with an organic cotton cover. I find it comfortable but my wife is still finding it a little on the firm side. I know Titanflex can take a long time to break in but we’re going to see it though for a little longer. We might look to do a split comfort with medium Titanflex for me and soft for her. We both don’t like the hug feeling of memory foam and previously tried a natural mattress with latex and neither of us liked how it felt either. Titanflex appears to be a good goldilocks between the two. I’m 5’11, 185 and a side/stomach combo sleeper, she’s 5’4, typically around 125/130 but is pregnant at the moment so her weight is higher and she’s mostly a side sleeper.

My only issue with this mattress is that it seems to be sleeping a little hotter than I was expecting (and neither of us are hot sleepers). I’m going to try and swap out the mattress protector I currently have for one that might have more of a cooling effect, but I was also wondering if it would be worth considering swapping out the 1" Variflex transition layer for a 1" Dunlop latex transition layer. From my understanding the setup of this mattress would be considered differential construction so the comfort layer would do most of the work of the pressure relief and wouldn’t rely much on the transition layer below. My thought is that the latex layer would be more durable and provide better airflow.

I’m wondering the following:

  • Am I correct in thinking swapping this layer could lead to a cooler mattress?
  • The current ILD of the Variflex is 18. Would I want a similar ILD with the Dunlop latex?
  • Will swapping the Variflex for Dunlop latex lead to a significantly different feeling of the mattress?
  • Are there any Trusted Members on this site that sell a 1" Dunlop latex that ship to Canada? The only one I’ve come across online is from SleepOnLatex but I’m not sure how they are viewed around here or if anyone can provide feedback.

Thanks
