Hi,
First let me say thank you for this site. I can across it while searching for information on foam mattresses. I have been learning so much here it is mind boggling. Even with all this information I still need and am asking for help. I am so confused, probably because I am so tired from little sleep.
First let me apologize for the length of this question(s).
Here is my story. I will be purchasing a horizontal, full size Murphy bed for myself that can have a mattress up to 12" (I want to stay in the 10"- 11" range). I am currently sleeping on a futon, with a full size mattress that is about 25 years old. It was comfortable enough until about a couple of years ago. Up until then it was fine because I generally like a firmish mattress. The mattress has, over the years, compressed enough that when waking in the morning my shoulders would be a little achy. I am a side sleeper.
My son recommended I buy a 2" memory foam, (Linenspa I believe) topper which I did and it has helped quite a bit on the shoulder pressure points, expect I sleep “HOT”, (and I live in Florida) and it is almost always hot. I added a small fan at the foot of the bed to help cool me off but in the summer not so much. And the futon mattress has gotten pretty heavy, now that that I am older (woman, early 70’s, 175 lbs., 5’4", and have shoulder weakness do to a fall). That 2" memory foam topper has a little weight to it also but manageable.
I believe I read somewhere in here that an innerspring mattress is lighter than latex and memory foam. So I was thinking maybe I should have a 6" – 8" innerspring mattress for lighter weight and add a 2" or 3" latex topper (since latex is cooler than memory foam). That would also make it much easier to change the sheets, turn the mattress, less weight to fold up into the bed, etc. correct? Would I still need a layer of memory foam?
So taking in all the above information could someone please tell me what innerspring mattress and topper(s) would you recommend for a Murphy bed, if you would recommend anything?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Rachel5.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum.
My apologies for the late reply! It’s been a bit busier around here than usual.
It sounds like you may be in the “analysis paralysis” phase of mattress shopping - it happens to all of us!
Innersprings allow for airflow under the mattress, so because you know you’re sleeping hot on memory foam (as most people do) I agree that innersprings are a good choice. You’ll want to verify that it’s a relatively simple innerspring without a pillowtop if you’re also looking to add a topper. Latex does not compress under heat the way memory foam does and sleeps cooler than all other foams. Is there a reason you’d prefer to do it this way over getting a latex hybrid which has all of the components in a single encasement?
No, if your latex is giving you the adequate pressure relief you need there’d be no need to add memory foam on top.
Definitely browse our Trusted Member directory. There are a lot of great options available! If you’re wanting to look specifically at toppers, I’d say DIY Mattress and Naturally Nestled are solid starting points.
