I’ve had a latex mattress - dunlop latex, medium firmness - for 4 years and it hasn’t created a heat problem in that time, until recently. I’ve been experiencing on and off warmth/heat that wasn’t a problem before. Could a latex mattress get warmer - warmer than it originally was - over a period of 4 years?
Hey there JBR,
Nice to see you back and it seems like you have experienced an unexpected change in your sleep comfort.
Generally, aging latex itself isn’t going to cause you to sleep warmer simply because the latex is getting older. Now, it is possible that as the latex softens a bit over time as it certainly can, you may sink into the mattress more than you did when it was new. When latex or any foam for that matter, softens, it can allow more of your body surface area to come into contact with the foam. This can reduce airflow around your body and potentially allow more heat to build up.
There are also other factors to consider, such as changes in the mattress cover or bedding, or even changes in the climate of the room. Have you changed your HVAC settings or gotten any new bedding? Even something as simple as adding a mattress protector or changing to a different type of comforter can make a difference in how warm you sleep.
I’d also consider whether anything has changed with you personally. Have you gained any weight, developed any new health issues, started taking any new medications, or changed your exercise routine? All of these things can potentially affect how warm you feel when sleeping.
The interesting thing that stands out to me is that you slept comfortably on this mattress for four years and are only experiencing this now. Was this change gradual, or did you wake up one day and ponder; I am sweating when I sleep, I wake up earlier than I used to; or why don’t I feel cool any more? That doesn’t rule out the mattress as a contributing factor, but I’d be looking at what may have changed recently before concluding that the latex itself is the problem.
What are your thoughts?
Maverick
I don’t know if its relevant but my mattress is a naturepedic that I can unzip. I did notice heat problems early but found if I flipped and rotated the cushions inside every evening, I wouldn’t get hot since I don’t lay on the same side for too long and that’s worked for years. The latex might’ve softened some, maybe that’s what it is. If the heat gets worse I could purchase new layers from their company. The only issue otherwise I’ve had is that while the bed’s good for side sleeping, not so much for back sleeping. I know I’m still able to back sleep because I did it years ago sleeping at my aunt’s (on a mattress model no longer available) so if you know of a mattress model that’s heat-free and good for back sleeping, let me know. Thanks.
One thing that almost always helps is to place a layer of wool, like a wool topper, wool mattress pad or wool mattress protector between you and the layer that may be causing the heat. Rotating the layers every evening may have worked, but that seems like a whole lot of effort that should not be needed. You may even be able to buy a layer of wool batting and place it inside the mattress and re-zip. An inch or inch and a half should fit with no issues.
