Hi, I’ve an odd queen mattress setup with a boxspring, an 5" Ikea Fonnes foam mattress and a 3" memory foam topper on it. It’s for someone around 100lb and growing. Despite the memory foam topper, he finds it a bit too firm and I was wondering if I can add another layer either on top of memory foam or under it to soften it up a bit. Also, would replacing boxspring with slats make any difference. It’s been a while since I bought the mattress and I don’t remember if Ikea discouraged using boxsprings as the foundation for their foam mattresses.
Any recommendations on what can be done to salvage this setup in terms of softness. Really appreciate any replies. Thanks.
Adding up to 2 more inches of either a soft talalay or memory foam will make it softer but may make it less supportive and could cause some back issues
Yes, that could help if you are using these types of slats that do have a bit of flex to them so that the mattress would give more than lying on a firm boxspring. It extends the lifetime and comfort of your mattress by absorbing most of the stress and weight on your bed. With some bases you can adjust the slats for firmness.
good luck with your search and please let us know what you decide to do!
Yes, you need a Firm mattress topper to soften it up. You require a mattress topper with a firmness rating between 7 and 8. The softer the mattress topper, the less support your body receives and the more you sink in, so be aware of those who claim that softer is better, since this is not the case. If you are suffering from back pain and need relief, you need something that presses into you and lets your body to rest and relax.
