I am in the market for a new mattress. Unfortunately I am separating from my partner and have been sleeping on an older icomfort and I am miserable. I hated shopping for mattresses in the past because I feel like it is entirely difficult to do the appropriate research. Before separating I was sleeping on a Beautyrest black that I never truly loved either. I am looking for a Queen size mattress and I am a side/stomach sleeper. The Beautyrest is currently on sale for $1299. The other mattresses are about $2000. Is it worth it to go up in price? I dont want to be pennywise and pound foolish. I am also contemplating getting an adjustable base with lumbar support. Is the base worth it as well. Any help is incredibly appreciated.
Hi irlist28,
Welcome to the mattress underground.
I dont normally like to take the negative chatter route against any mattress or company, but there are some things worth considering. One phrase that we often hear a lot is, “they dont make them, like they used to.”
If you read the reviews on line and consumer feedback, you may find that this proverb is often associated with many of the legacy brand mattresses. While it may not place these mattresses at the bottom of the quality lists, when it comes to price to value and quality, there are a lot better choices.
I have to assume if you are looking at the $1299 BR it is not from their Black Series or it is a phased out black from their “letter” series rather than their new “number” series.
Given your specific sleeping preferences as a side and stomach sleeper, as I mentioned, this would be a good time to shy away from the Beautyrest mattress. While it might be a tempting deal at $1299, it likely doesn’t provide the level of support that stomach sleepers particularly need. Stomach sleepers typically require a mattress with a robust support layer to prevent the spine from sagging, which is something the Beautyrest may not fully offer.
For side sleeper side of things, you need a mattress that offers a balance of cushioning for pressure relief at the hips and shoulders, but also firm support to maintain spinal alignment. To achieve this, I would suggest considering a mattress with a couple of inches of cushioned quilted top or perhaps a soft latex comfort layer or topper, which would add comfort without compromising support.
In terms of going up in price, it can be worth the investment if you opt for a mattress designed specifically for your sleeping positions, especially if you are tired of feeling miserable. A higher-quality mattress can better accommodate your long term needs for both support and comfort, which can lead to better sleep and overall health in the long run.
There are a host of mattress that can offer you the feel and in the price range you are looking. The @DLX classic hybrid, the Brooklyn Bedding Titan Elite, if you like the feel of latex, @Latex_Mattress_Fact1 or @Arizona_Premium can build one to suit your personal preferences, posture and alignment and pressure relief concerns. @EngineeredSleep will move you slightly up the price spectrum, but still under 2k and they can build you a mattress that will work to your satisfaction.
Understandably, folks like to try things first before buying. One thing that is great with many of the Trusted Members here at TMU, is if you tell them what you are looking for, they can simply build it and they are good at it, over 90% success rather just by collaborating with the customer to find the perfect balance of support and comfort needed.
When you do a layer by layer comparison of the KK vs the Aireloom, the Aireloom seems to excel in natural and quality of materials. The King Koil Orchid Hybrid offers a medium to firm feel, making it a good choice for side sleepers and those who prefer a balance between comfort and support. The Aireloom Luxury Firm, on the other hand, offers a firmer feel, which may be better suited for your stomach sleeping where you need more support.
King Koil incorporates its share of natural fibers and foams ( New Zealand Joma Wool is moisture wicking and regulates heat with superior hypoallergenic loft that holds multiple third party certifications for social responsibility
Natural Talalay Latex that relieves pressure and is highly resilient and durable. Talalay is certified to be baby safe with no harmful chemical 2000 glue-free micro coils that are zoned to relieve pressure and conform to the body’s curves Natural Cotton that enhances comfort, dissipates heat and is hypoallergenic.
The Aireloom focuses on luxury foam and natural materials like wool, which contribute to a firmer and cooler sleep experience. )
Overall, Aireloom is positioned as the higher-end option due to its luxury materials used but KK does a very nice job.
Insofar as the adjustable base, the adjustable base with lumbar support, it could be a good addition, especially if you often find yourself shifting positions or wanting more back support. I recently purchased a yawnder4 adjustable base for my MiL and paired it with a DLX premier hybrid. It was one model level short of offering the lumbar support, but, if your mattress offers a robust support layer, the lumbar support may not be necessary for an extra several hundred dollars. These bases can offer adjustable comfort for different sleeping positions and alleviate pressure points, but make sure it’s a feature you feel would truly enhance your sleep quality. Just be certain that the deck of the adjustable is solid wood deck rather than the metal grid style.
In your price range you have a lot of choices. Just be sure to check each one layer by layer to ensure you choose a mattress with no weak links.
Happy Holidays and all the best,
Maverick
