I have read all the information and understand what I should look for but where I am located in Pocatello, Idaho we don’t have very many local manufacturers and finding the right mattress is difficult. I am a mostly side/stomach sleeper and currently every time I get up my back hurts. It hurts to the point that I don’t want to go to bed at night because I know what I will feel like in the morning. I am 5’1" 155#. I know I need a firm but which one. I am looking at mattresses online. Things like Overstock—Bed Bath & Beyond | The Best Deals Online: Furniture, Bedding, Rugs, Kitchen Essentials & Moree
or Costco, but they don’t seem to have any with just a tight top. I am afraid the “Pillow top” is going to be to soft.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Hi sbidaho,
Hopefully you’ve read post #1 here and are following the steps.
If you are “stuck” on step 3 … then some of the better options I’m aware of that are reasonably close to you are in post #9 here.
As the guidelines suggest … I would avoid any mattress where you aren’t able to find out the quality of all the layers which are inside it (including the spring Air you linked which has far to much “mystery foam” in the layering) and would be a risky and “blind” purchase unless you know the density of all the foam layers. With Spring Air … this isn’t something you will likely be able to find (see this article).
Regardless of how soft it may be … when you have that much lower quality materials in the upper layers of a mattress (over 3 1/2" in this case) then the risk of foam softening and the more rapid loss of comfort and support that goes with it is much higher. Foam softening and the breakdown of lower quality materials in the upper layers is the main reason that people need to replace a mattress and isn’t covered by any warranty except in the rare cases that the resulting unweighted impression is deeper than the warranty exclusion and there are no other warranty exclusions that apply to you.

Thanks Phoenix,
I will get in touch with the Pocatello MattresSmart. I have visited several places but I don’t get the “warm fuzzy” that they are trying to help vs selling me a mattress. Will let you know my final decision.
Hi sbidaho,
I took a look at about 15 retailers in the Pocatello area and based on their websites (I didn’t talk with any of them) there certainly isn’t much in the area that would attract me outside of MattresSmart.
Beyond this I would consider heading towards Idaho Falls unless further research uncovers something better in Pocatello.
