How vital is it to use a casing for a latex mattress? Maybe a silly question but - if I stack latex layers without a case, how much do they move/shift? I will eventually order a casing to fit the layers, but as I am not sure which comfort layer works for me and what the end height will be … it might be good while sleeping on a latex … stack? At this point, I have ordered three layers of blended Talalay and plan to add an extra layer for extra cushioning if needed.
What happens when you have a quilted case that is slightly too big ( like those sold from Arizona premium mattresses) - by 1/2 an inch or an inch - would that be a problem?
Has anyone here found a non-quilted ( no additional layers of wool or cotton ) and ideally washable casing for latex? Or use a " naked" layer system? I am not fond of the " quilted feel" and additional stiffness of most mattress casings, and I like to be closer to the foam.
You are correct, the mattress cover serves to keep the latex layers together; sleeping on a latex ‘stack’ could allow for the layers to move around, and this could possibly undermine the ‘structural integrity’ and support of the mattress as a whole. A cover slightly larger - as the 1/2" you mentioned - can allow for a bit of minor movement but is better than sleeping on ‘loose’ latex layers, and would allow for some freedom in exchanging or adding layers in the future. Many of the Trusted Members of the site offer zippered mattress covers of various materials: as you said Arizona Premium has mattress covers of organic cotton & wool and bamboo, SleepEZ. also carries organic cotton & wool and bamboo mattress covers, and Latex Mattress Factory has natural cotton and wool mattress covers…hopefully others can chime in if they have experience with other zippered mattress covers also. Let us know how the DIY build feels when you receive it!
Thanks @hester! That looks like a great inexpensive solution, as it’s a thin cotton cover that functions as a zippered slipcase. Great suggestion for @flybear!
Thank you! That is what I am looking for - I was also able to find a cover at Sleep like a Bear, and there are a few commercial foam mattress makers that sell replacement casing. Unfortunately … my latex foam- ordered about two weeks ago- has not even shipped yet, so I am still unable to try it out or find out what case size I will need. It is getting a little frustrating - or maybe I am just impatient.
I currently have a 2.4 inch Turmerry Dunlop egg crate topper in a pretty loose topper cover on top of bare 3 inches of memory foam on top of old base foam, and nothing shifts under a sheet only. I really love the latex egg crate for those pesky pressure points ad can’t wait to find out how it will work with some Talalay underneath …
