Hi, haven’t been here for years because my reliefmart mattress still feels like a cloud! But I am in a rental for 3-5 months with a mediocre mattress, just a bit too saggy. Looking to order on line something under $150, preferably 1-2 inches, to firm up the bed. I would prefer something that sleeps cool, but not a deal breaker. I am 5’8" and 200 lbs and a side sleeper.
While I would love a specific brand recommendation, I am just looking for advice on material and thickness. I am used to getting a mattress pad to soften up a mattress not firm it up. Thanks, Deborah
Welcome back to TMU ! Good to see you again and thanks for your question.
That’s excellent news that you’re still happy with your reliefmart mattress, Deborah! Which one did you end up going with? Knowing its materials and construction may provide clues as to what sort of topper constructions you may prefer.
Thanks for including your personal statdetails, those are a good starting point for understanding what materials and thickness would better serve your side sleeping/ sleep cool preferences. Here are a few questions for you: what brand and type mattress are you using in your rental? What size is it? As you are only leasing for 3-5 months, what plans do you have for the topper when you leave? Would you considering using it with your reliefmart mattress?
Once we learn a bit more about your rental mattress, we can move towards material and thickness suggestions. Looking forward to your reply and thanks .
The mattress is a full, about six inches thick, no name. It is not memory or latex, maybe inner springs or coils?? It is on slats, no foundation. I will probably toss the pad when I leave, my relief mart is perfect as is. Certainly it doesn’t need firming. The details on the type are not on the cloud, I think it was harmonium, but I can’t remember. I bought it around ten years ago but it feels like new.
I don’t think latex is affordable, except for Natural Green 2 inch latex topper. Also looking at subrtex 2 inch memory foam. If I go over 2 inches, I will have to get new sheets. Thanks
Thanks for sharing those details Deborah, they help to better understand what you’re working with at your rental. If you plan to discard the topper after your stay, you probably would prefer not to invest too much on a 3-5 month old item.
Thanks for considering a topper purchase from Sleep on Latex! They do offer a 2" full size topper within your budget and would be happy to consult with you regarding the proper firmness to best suit your bed. From Surbtex’s site, gel-infused memory foam topper’s specs are not listed, other than it’s manufactured from high resilience materials, so there is no way to comment on its durability potential. If you do plan to “toss” the topper afterwards, its price and comfort feel are likely your main considerations and if you choose a memory foam direction, there are a vast array of those to choose from in a 2" thickness and $150 budget for a full size. You may consider reviewing our trusted members offering polyfoam/ memory foam toppers, you may find them here. Good luck with your research and let us know what you decide on.
Honestly, I find this a very unsatisfactory answer, especially as I answered all of your questions. My main point was that many toppers are used to soften a bed while I am using one to firm up a saggy bed. Given my objective, what things should I be looking at? So what materials and what thicknesses would be preferable to firm up a bed. If you don’t know, that’s fine, just tell me. But you have not answered any of my original questions.

I can hear your frustration “between the lines” so to speak and apologize that you find my responses to be “very unsatisfactory.” You may have noticed from others’ posts that mattress/ components/ accessory shopping is an extremely personal, subjective experience, as only you can “feel” what you feel on a particular mattress setup and in a given mattress environment. The moderators ask many questions to help guide consumers with their research, as well as analyze products presented to them in regard to durability concerns. Questions about your personal mattress give a better idea of what firmness you prefer and how you may be trying to somewhat replicate with a short-term topper. Questions about whether you planned to use it at home with your current mattress help better understand what topper might pair well with both mattresses. In your previous reply, you mentioned 2 toppers of interest, and I looked them over and offered you my thoughts as well as a link to the trusted members that may be of help to you. We are genuinely interested in each consumer’s research and endeavor to be supportive, but at times an online forum is not where all problems are solved easily.

Keeping in mind your point that "many toppers are used to soften a bed while I am using one to firm up a saggy bed", toppers are used to provide additional comfort and pressure relief to the upper part of the mattress, while support and spinal alignment is provided by the support core. You have mentioned before that latex isn’t affordable, ruling that out as a material. Some natural fibers such as wool provide a firmer mattress topper feel; however, those would be priced outside of your $150 budget. A 2"- 3" memory foam/ polyfoam topper of the firmest density and heavier cover construction may work for your short 3-5 month stay. You will find many lesser expensive choices online and this article with some suggestions by Sleep Foundation may be a good starting point. Hope this helps a little more and that you find a solution soon, Deborah.
