Christeli Mattress Decision

Hi everyone,

I used to have a Christeli Briella mattress, which I absolutely loved, but I had to part with it because it was too soft for my partner. I’ve attached a breakdown of the layers from my old Briella for reference.

Now, Christeli has introduced a new lineup, including the Performance Soft and Luxury Soft models, which they claim are comparable to my old Briella. One feature I particularly liked about the Briella was that the top foam layers were detachable from the support base. This made it easier and more affordable to refresh the top layer in the future instead of replacing the entire mattress. This is the same with the new line up, which is great.

However, I do have a few concerns. The old Briella had a 5.3 lb density foam, which I found to be excellent, but I’ve been informed that the new lineup only offers 4-4.5 lb density foam. While this isn’t necessarily bad, it’s not as robust as what I’m used to.

For context, I’m 5’7”, sleep hot, and weigh 175 lbs. The Luxury model combines latex and memory foam, and during a chat, they mentioned it’s slightly softer than the Performance model. The Performance model is 12 inches thick and uses memory foam only. But they are both advertised on the website as a 4 out of 10 softness, and not sure if I want to pay an additional $300 for incremental softness if its not as noticeable.

My question is about the softness and composition. I’m curious how the Luxury model could be softer if it includes latex, which I’ve always known to be more “springy” than memory foam. I prefer that soft, clay-like sink-in feeling.

Currently, I have a Purple Restore Premier, which seemed like a good medium-firm compromise for both my partner’s back/stomach sleeping and my side sleeping. However, I find it firmer than I like, while my partner thinks it’s too soft. We’ve decided to get our own individual mattresses—two Twin XLs to make a King—since our needs are so different.

So, my main questions are:

1. Is Christeli still a good buy given the lower foam density compared to what it used to be (5.3 lbs vs. 4-4.5 lbs now)?

2. Should I opt for the Performance or Luxury Soft? The Luxury is pricier and has latex, which I’m not particularly interested in due to its springiness. But if it is indeed softer, I’m open to it. I know the layering makes a difference but just not as knowledgeable here.

Any insights or experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Anyone? Hoping to purchase soon.

I would be happy to give you a perspective that comes from my 20+ years of mattress consulting and design work. I have been working with 5lb. memory foam for about 17 years with the Tempflow mattress brand and I can tell you that there is no substitute for that 5lb. more slow reactive and dense “clay like” feel that is truly unmatched in terms of pressure relief, as well as support when comparing to lower densities.

There are variations on how soft the foam ILD, but if the density changes, the whole overall support and feel changes. With Tempflow, we are now offering our GripLock modular cover system that will give you the ability to make layer changes and we do offer completely free layer exchanges that will ensure you get the right type of firmness and support you are looking for. Feel free to contact us at www.Tempflow.com or through this forum and we can either customize what you are looking for or you can further inquire about some of our stock models.

You can even call us direct at 800 667-1969 and I would be happy to personally go over options. Even if you choose to go with a customized version, make sure you let us know that you came from TMU and you can use the code TMU10 for an extra 10% off as a forum reader.

Hi there!
I cannot address the first question as I’m not too familiar with the Christeli. But on question #2, get the best mattress that you can afford. It looks like the difference would be about $600 and over 10 years, that is only 60 dollars a year for something you would sleep on every single night.
With latex, it will depend on the type of latex. We find that both dunlop and talalay latex provide a contouring, but not a sinking feel. I would think that a 14 inch mattress would be softer than a 12 inch mattress in most cases.

It also looks like you can swap out the top layer (where the latex is located) if needed. It gives me pause that you can only swap out the top layer. With many of the latex mattresses we offer, you can swap out any layer that is customizable.

That is my two cents worth. Good luck with your decision!
