Hi, I purchasing a hybrid latex mattress. My question has to do with the comfort layer. I see some manufacturers who offer 3-inch talaylay immediately on top of the innersprings, while others offer the same thickness for the comfort layer but this 3" layer is made out of different thinner layers. How will this affect the sinking in feeling? Or does differentiating the top comfort layers with different materials just a way to mitigate cost of overall mattress? Not doing DIY.
You can get some useful differences in feel and pressure relief by mixing materials in the comfort layer. Latex can be just fine on its own, but some sleepers find it to be too bouncy or have too much pushback. One way to mitigate that feeling is to put a layer of softer polyfoam or memory foam under the latex. This allows the latex to still provide pressure relief, but in a more contoured manner - because the latex sinks into the softer foam a bit.
Sometimes going the other direction has benefits too. My current diy bed has 2” serene foam over 2” medium latex. The softer serene foam has a very nice “sinking into a cloud” feeling, while the firmer latex acts as a backstop to still provide support and keep from sinking in too far.
Thanks, this is helpful.
