Concerned about new purchase

Hi Phoenix,

My wife and I took delivery of a new mattress yesterday and I am starting to have a bit of buyers remorse. Was hoping to get some of your perspective on this. Starting from the beginning, after some shopping around, we arrived at Texas Mattress Makers. We tried lying on several beds and finally made a decision on one. I understand that it is structured using two layers of pocketed micro coils with polyurethane foam as a comfort layer and also a lower layer. The bed felt great in the show room and I got the impression that it provided the PPP that you describe. It felt as through my spine and other body parts were aligned and that there was a little cradling. The mattress was also towards their upper end in price . The representative helped guide us through our assessment of the beds.

I now have a few concerns.

First, the bed feels quite a bit softer and flexible than I recall feeling in the show room. It seems to have more give than I expected so I am now a little worried that we may not be getting the PPP that we thought we had assessed. I have considered that this is perhaps an adjustment issue due to the fact that we have been sleeping on an ultra firm queen mattress for the past few weeks.

Second, when we purchased the bed, they told us that if we we dissatisfied, we could return the bed for an exchange anytime within the first 3 months. My concern is that we did not receive this in writing. All I have is the actual receipt. I think I may have made a mistake there.

In any case, am I perhaps assessing the new bed too early? I can not say that it is at all uncomfortable. Just feels more cushiony than I am used to and allows the hips to sink down more than I am used to.

If you have any thoughts, I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

Hi Britchap,

Most people have had the experience of testing mattresses on one day and then testing the same mattress the next day after you have tried other mattresses and it feels different because your frame of reference has changed. I know in my own case I have tested mattresses in the morning for example and then tested other mattresses and gone back to test the first one again in the afternoon and it felt different than what I remembered again because my frame of reference had changed.

As you mentioned you will go through a adjustment period with any new sleeping surface (especially when it’s different from what you have been sleeping on) and in most cases it’s best to do nothing in the first few weeks as you adjust to the feel of your new mattress and the mattress also breaks in a bit. It sounds like you are sleeping well with no symptoms in terms of pressure relief or alignment (at least that you mentioned) so it may just be a matter of adjusting to a new “feel” which is very normal.

If you are sleeping well then it’s certainly not something I would be concerned about and certainly not in the first few weeks.

Congratulations on your new mattress as well

I don’t know the details of their exchange policy but you could confirm what it is with a quick phone call.

Thanks Phoenix. Great advice. I’ll hold off on doing anything at least for a few weeks.
