First of all apologies if i am posting in wrong forum. I have been struggling to find a matterss that sutis me and been unsuccessful. just got recommendatinos from someone on redflagdeals to post here so here i am.
A little background about me. I am 38 years old. 205lbs, 5 ft 11 tall. I grew up in a third world country where upto age 27 I used to sleep on the floor with some padding on it. Never had any issue. I moved to canada and ever since then i had issues to sleep on a mattress. Earlier, I was sleeping on the floor and then got married and now me and my partner sleep on queen size bed.
I have tried multiple mattresses (including Endys mattress which i had to return with 20 days since it was horrible). The latest mattress that i have is from SleepCountry (there second hardest mattress). I bought it in 2019 and for 1 year it was perfectly fine but recenlyt, I started to get same pain again. The pain is more or less around shoulders, under shoulder blades and then on the back where ribs connect with spine.
I sleep on my right side mostly but the way i sleep is that i bring my left arm under my pillow right below my face. This is to give some height to pillow. Regardless of how high the pillow i use (i have tried putting some sheets under the pillow to raise the pillow), I am still used to bring my left arm under my face. I also keep my left leg spread towards right side. So not sure if its “side sleeper” posture or not.
The mattress that i got from sleepcountry is directly placed on to my bed frame. the frame doesn’t have any spring box etc. it has some wooden sticks which are not glued/nailed to the frame. here is a picture of the frame.
Now what should i do? I am looking for a matrress so that me and my partner can sleep together on the bed (she can’t sleep on the floor). Any reocmmendations?
Welcome to the Mattress Underground ! Thanks for your question.
Congrats on your new mattress shopping journey, OGHtorSe ! Thanks for including your personal stats and it would be helpful to know your partner’s age, weight and height as well. With your weight/ height placing you into the higher end of the BMI scale/ 28.6, it will be important for you to have an understanding of the mattress you are considering in terms of durability. A mattress’s durability/ how long its useful life would be is affected by the body type of the person/ persons that sleep on it. Higher body weights (or more specifically a higher BMI) will compress the layers in a mattress more deeply than lighter body types (or a lower BMI) so the mattress will generally need more durable and firmer materials and components in the upper layers than those that are in lower weight ranges for the mattress to maintain its comfort and support for a similar length of time. You can learn more about this subject in Phoenix’s article, “Mattress Durability Guidelines: How Long will a Mattress Last?”.
From Endy’s web site, I see that the Endy mattress is described a 10", 3 layer proprietary foam construction, having a “medium-firm” firmness and designed to “provide optimal comfort for individuals under 250 pounds, with a total capacity of 500 pounds.” As you began experiencing pain within the first 20 days, its difficult to understand whether your body had fully “readjusted” itself to the mattress’s “feel” or whether it’s firmness didn’t match your comfort preferences. You may find Phoenix’s article “Determining Your Personal Statistics” helpful for better understanding how your personal preferences and sleep style play a role in the type mattress materials and construction best suited for you. As you don’t mention which mattress you have from SleepCountry, I have no way to comment on what may be problematic with it. What brand/ type mattress have you slept on with the least pain in the past?
What type pillow are you using and when was it replaced last? If the height (or incorrect height in relation to your overall spinal alignment) requires constant adjustment, this could be adding to your overall comfort concerns.
Which mattress did you get from SleepCountry and what type foundation does the manufacturer suggest using with it? From the image you shared, it is unclear of the spacing between the slats; can you measure and comment on that? Looking forward to hearing your updates and your thoughts on Phoenix’s article advice .
