Convert Sleep Number P5 King to 2 Twin XL Mattresses

I am new to this forum so I hope I am doing this right.

I have a Sleep Number P5 King mattress that I want to convert to two Twin XL mattresses. I am thinking I can use all the inside parts and just buy two Twin XL outer covers.

  • Has anyone done this?
  • Any recommendations on where to find the Twin XL outer covers?
  • Is there anything else that I would need to do this?

Thanks.

I do not have any experience with this mattress but the (11") P5 king airbed mattress with memory & polyfoams is listed as having dual comfort adjustment for each side I am not sure how the separation process would go. The first thing I’d want to know is if the air chambers and foams on top can be easily separated without damaging them in the process. You may want to call this number (314) 599-2777 from Air bed Repair that helps with rebuilding Slip Number Beds and parts to ask a few questions about your project.

You’d need at least 11" thick encasements and these are easy to find depending on the fabric you favor. At a quick glance on our Trusted members ~ Directory Find a list of a few
• Arizona Premium Mattress cover has a large selection of mattress covers, bamboo, organic wool cover, organic cotton. The zipper is made with Teflon and zips around all four corners making it easy to assemble. Some models come in sizes from 6" to 15"
• DIY Natural Bedding also has an [https://diynaturalbedding.com/product/expandable-knit-ticking/] expandable 100% Organic Cotton Double-knit ticking [/url]that you might wish to consider (3" to 15" in thickness)
• Latex Mattress Factory has a removable and washable 360-degree zipper cotton cover from 2" to 12" in thickness.
• Memory Foam Comfort (member of this site…Canada) carries zippered and removable Tencel (eucalyptus), Bamboo, Teddy (terry cloth) or Wool quilted 100% organic cotton sizes 4-12".
• Nest Bedding also has this mattress encasement.
• Sleep EZ has Natural and Organic cotton & wool Zippered Mattress covers between 6" and 12" in thickness

Hopefully, someone that managed to open the mattress to have a peek inside will see your post and chime in with a few comments. Let us know how your project goes.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but even though a normal king is the same size as two twin XL beds there’s a bit of an issue when just splitting a Sleep Number king in half. The issue is that there is a 4" foam surround on a SN bed but on a king bed there’s very little foam in the middle (only 2" vs 8" you’d need, see pic below) between the air chambers so it won’t work the way you were thinking. In order to make it work you’d need (2) twin XL air chambers, (2) sets of foam surround and (2) mattress covers (I’m assuming the air pump will still be hooked to both chambers). The comfort layer can just be split in half so that’s not an issue at all.

Here’s the P5 construction:

All of the items are available on eBay and your king bed parts you don’t want would likely sell very quickly on there too.

You can also get alot of the parts you need here (esp the foam side rails, they are much better than OEM):
