Cutting and rotating sagging latex mattress - update

I posted a few months ago that I was having morning backaches and blamed our 9-10 yo latex mattress. I asked here if cutting this mattress in half crosswise, rotating each half 180 degrees and glueing the two pieces together (which would move the sagging areas to the foot and the head) would be worth doing.

Well we finally did it last week. With an electric knife, a small one (should have bought a larger one), we sawed the mattress in half crosswise. That was quite easy to do.
We then rotated each piece and tried it out…
It worked fine, and there was no need to glue each half together, as we thought we’d have to do. Sleeping it felt no different than before, except it felt firmer in the middle area.

The end result was…it did feel firmer and it did help some with the morning backaches that was having. After about a week of sleeping on this “new” mattresses my backaches were definitely not as bad, still a little, but a definite improvement.

The conclusion is…it was worth doing, but we are still sleeping on 10yo foam, and we have decided to replace the mattress. Question now is which one? That will be the subject of my next post.

Again, I want to thank everyone who responded to my original post. This is a great forum!

I followed your initialpost with great interest, as you had some interesting feedback from the TMU community regarding your proposed project and its execution. I’m glad to hear that you were able to complete your experiment and that the findings met your expectations, as far as the results yielded some improvement. But to your point, a 10 year old mattress having support issues likely needs replacing anyway, so it seems you are now back at square one.

Congrats on your new mattress shopping journey  ! Looking forward to your next post and hearing more details as you start your process. Good luck Happy and let us know how we may help  .
