We recently purchased this daybed w/ Trundle from Ikea and are looking for 2 mattress to go with. We have roughly 19" from the slats to the top of the daybed, so when its like a chaise we’ll be stacking 2 6" twin mattresses on top of each other. Not sure if we can get a way with 8" mattresses, might be a little too high.
We went to Mattress to Go today and tried the Therapedic BackSense Tacoma Firm. The value of the mattress seemed unbeatable (American made and only $99), though when we laid on it, it was like sleeping on a cinder block. I know I can soften it up by throwing a mattress topper on there and that is what we are leaning to doing, but wanted to see if there were any other options out there??
This will mainly be used by adults. I’m 175lbs and my wife is 130lbs (our dog is 50lbs). Not looking to spend more than $150/mattress since this isn’t our main guest room and wont be used terribly often. I prefer to shop local as opposed to going on Amazon/Wayfair and finding the cheapest foam mattress available.

Congrats on your new Flekke daybed w/ trundle purchase ! Thanks for including the product link, I used it to check out the measurements of the daybed and Ikea recommends two twin mattresses in up to 5 1/2" thickness, so to your point, you will want to work with 6" mattresses or less.
Thanks for considering a mattress purchase from expert trusted member Mattress To Go ! I regard them most highly in terms of expertise, quality and customer support post-sale. Thanks too for including the Therapedic BackSense link, that saved a few clicks for checking its’ materials and construction out. I can see why you compared lying on it to “sleeping on a cinder block”, its VertiCoil innerspring unit uses 13 gauge steel offset coils, resulting in quite a firm support feel. Its traditional tight top construction, combined with .5" quilting/polyfoam layer and .5" polyfoam comfort later all pair with the one firmness its available in: Firm. Given its name of “BackSense”, this construction would indeed work well for backsleepers. You don’t say, but was this the only twin option in the thickness range that you found so far? Would you rather find a mattress whose support and comfort were ideal from the start and avoid doctoring it with more bulk that you’re trying to minimize from a height/ thickness standpoint?

It’s most thoughtful of you to shop locally when possible and support small business owners, especially when you have a reputable, deeply experienced mattress showroom owner like Jeff Schueuer nearby. I’ve combed TMU’s trusted members’ web sites and do not see anything meeting your wish list requirements of 6" or less thickness for $150 for a twin, Mattress To Go definitely has the best value for what you’re shopping for. You can always ask Jeff too for other local recommendations, he would be happy to help you if he can. Jeff was a fantastic! Someone who knows the industry and really explained everything in terms of materials and did not push us at all was refreshing. We are also looking at King mattresses, so he was quite helpful as we begin our search for a King mattress as well. I’ll make a separate topic on that once I get some specs on a few mattresses
Outside of Amazon or online retailers where it just says “6"foam mattress” and doesnt give me any specs not really. I found a post by Pheonix on the forum that listed all the Mattress retailers in the Metro Detroit Area and Peerless mattress had this Brighton Gel Mattress but when I called them they didn’t have much info on the specs. They said the top 1.5" layer of gel foam was 1.2lb and couldn’t give me any specs on the 4.5" base layer. Even assuming it was 1.5lb or 1.8lb, it seems like I’m better off with the Therapedic that Jeff has to offer topped with a topper since 1.2lb doesn’t meet the threshold of good quality foam based on what I’ve read on this site.
I called the Mattress Source in Lansing, they said they have a Capitol Bedding mattress that is 7". 7" might be the highest I can go based on measuring that daybed from slats to top of the bed. It is made specifically for Mattress Source, so I couldn’t find it on the Capitol Bedding website not could I get any specs from the sales person. I am a huge fan of Capitol Bedding (and the Mattress Source), potentially a bit bias too because my current mattress is from them and I really like it and like them as a company. So I am going to go check that one out and also see if I can get more specs on the materials. Though talking to the person on the phone, I was told it was coils as the base and a sheet of foam on top. So I would assume it is similar to the Therapedic that Jeff has.
Ideally yes, but price and quality of materials/value are the biggest driving factor here. If I can find a mattress that 7" or less that is good quality materials that I can get locally in Michigan under $200 per mattress, that would be best case scenario. Upping the price a bit since I figured a good mattress topper would be around $100 for a twin to have a good comparison. If I have to doctor it up by adding a topper, that is not the end of the world. The topper(s) will honestly only be used when the trundle is pulled out and for sleeping
