Dazed and Confused in Maryland

Things are not alright alright alright. This is going to be very specific so bear with me. We just bought a new Purple Restore Plus Hybrid mattress in king size. This is a warranty replacement for our original Purple mattress which was caving in at the edges after 7 years. The new mattress is causing my wife hip and back pain. She had no issues with our original Purple bed and she is not having issues sleeping on a 20 year old coil spring mattress in our guest room. She has also not had any issues sleeping in hotel beds for recent travel. We need to get something to replace the new mattress. Because it is a warranty replacement the normal Purple return guarantee does not apply. We are going to have to eat the cost of the mattress. Purple has changed its mattresses so the original Purple is not available. The guest room mattress is a queen Sealy or Serta and we do not even know the model and it is 20 years old so it is likely all the names have changed by now. We also have an issue of getting a traditional spring king size mattress into our bedroom. The one we had 20 years ago when we moved into our house was a traditional spring mattress which was great but ended up sagging because the movers had to fold it to get up the stairs and end ended up causing a sagging mattress. I generally can sleep on anything but we now have to get a new mattress and it is causing my wife a lot of stress. I want to make sure we can get a good mattress but now there are so many choices it may even be worse than when you just went to a department or mattress store to buy a bed. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated. If more information is needed I would be happy to provide it.

To help narrow things down and offer some more specific guidance, can you share:

  • What feels comfortable for you and your wife? For example, what does she like about the guest bed or hotel mattresses? (And what do you like?)
  • Any particular sleeping positions (back, side, combo)?
  • Her approximate height and weight (even a range helps, as it affects how deeply she’ll sink into comfort layers)?

Once we know a bit more, we can point you to some much better-suited (and more supportive) options!

May I ask why you are not surprised with Purple issues. It would be good information to know in figuring out things going forward.
