We’re building out our mattress and need some advice on coils.
I’m 160 and my wife is 100. All position sleeping—but me mostly stomach and her mostly side.
We’re thinking a 2in medium (maybe soft) Dunlop layer and a 2in Soft talalay top layer. Details still a little TBD. Then I want to get a cover with a good bit of wool.
But right now I’m stuck on coils. Originally was deciding between the Combizone or Bolsa L&P. But reading about Texas Pocket Springs Quad Coil makes those seems like a great option, maybe with fewer potential problems.
You can get 15.5g with one firm side and put it in one side of a king mattress cover, then a PLUSH side with one firm side and put it in the other side of the king cover. Unless she likes a firmer surface to side sleep on. The 15.5g coils feel like a 6.75 firmness to me at 6’0" 205 pounds. I think plush would feel, in practice like a 5/10.
And for the layers I think what you stated would be a good idea. Dunlop is a little firmer than talalay because it’s more dense. Soft Dunlop as the transition layer should definitely be considered for her side. Considering you need your surface to stay more flat and in order for a bed to contour well enough for a light side sleeper, usually softer is needed, you guys setups need to be quite a bit different. And medium Dunlop is actually pretty firm in practice. Keep in mind my weight was 215 lbs at 6,0 and I had the Texas pocket spring quadmini on top of their 14.75 g firm springs, with a 2" of medium Dunlop…the surface was really making me upset to try to sleep on with how firm and responsive it felt. So maybe soft Dunlop with soft talalay on top would be better for her side and you definitely need a little firmer as a stomach sleeper. Probably medium Dunlop with soft Dunlop or medium talalay if you’d like a touch firmer surface.
I’m giving out ideas, ultimately you need to use your imagination with realizing about what everything would feel like to come to your best conclusion. Talalay is a little plusher and buoyant because it’s more uniform and a little lower density than Dunlop.
Another thing to know is that using different materials either on top or under the latex will help settle down the responsiveness. If you were to use a high GSM wool topper then that would be basically like adding an inch or two of super soft latex on top, so you need to take that into account with the other layers to make sure you stay a bit more up on top.
Thanks! That’s helpful! Unfortunately we can’t do a split springs set up as we’re locked into a queen.
My wife does like some a decent firm surface under some top layer of softness. Her best sleeping as been camping on the group with a couple inches of camping pads.
I’m looking at APM for the foam and I think maybe the can do two different levels. So I could maybe do a medium transition and keep her at soft.
I’m leaning toward the 15.5 Quad Springs from TPS just because they seem to be really well made. I did just read about someone putting an upholstery pad under their lumbar on some TPS coils to make some zoning and that sounds intriguing as an option for my side of the bed too.
Okay, yes the 15.5g is a great do it all and would probably work for you. And since she is ok with a little firmer surface you could probably do the same layers of medium and soft.
Maybe an upholstery pad for zoning for my stomach sleeping side
2in medium Dunlop from APM
2in soft (or maybe even super soft) talalay from APM
12in cover from APM
Maybe a wool mattress protector for some added wool on top
The mattress we liked the best in store was the Avocado Green medium with a talalay topper, with me wanting to to be just a little firmer under the topper.
Looks great. Amazon has a lot of different wool mattress covers, higher GSM number means thicker layer. There will be covers and toppers with toppers having a much higher thickness.
Make sure the cover you use for your build holds on those coils well, wouldn’t want them to spread out. I had that issue with mine until I managed how they were fit into my cotton stretch cover. I think I liked the way the bamboo wool cover from mattresses.net looked over the cotton stretch cover from Texas pocket springs. The cotton stretch cover just has a thin layer of stretchy cotton on top…I don’t actually like that very much.
Sorry to confuse you with so many options. That’s just how this all goes. You seem knowledgeable enough to know how to manage the level and gradients of firmnesses you need.
