I have been getting very, very sick from lack of sleep, and I need to get a new mattress, but despite months of researching I cannot for the life of me find one with the specifications I need!
I am looking for a queen mattress that is:
-extremely low VOC (I have a mast cell disease and get very sick around offgassing)
-Latex and Wool free (allergic to both)
-Soft (I’m 5’1 and just over 100 lbs and I sleep on my side, I really need something soft)
-Cool (I sleep very, very hot and really need something cold!)
-Not obscenely expensive. I can pay an average price, but some of the mattresses I’ve seen were 15,000+ and I definitely cannot afford to drop that much, oh my goodness!! I’m hoping to stay under 2000 but I know my needs are specific, so if you know of something that costs more but fits, I suppose I would still be interested to hear it!
The best I’ve ever slept was on my ex’s old, worn out, spring (hybrid?) mattress that was soft and cool and too old to offgas. I don’t really love the idea of a second hand mattress though since I can’t guarantee it’s history… so that’s just to give an idea of what feel I’m looking for!
Thanks for sharing your sleep stats and preferences/must-haves with us. It sounds like you know what you need, but that finding it is the challenge you’re facing. The mattress that immediately came to mind while reading your post is the Pure Echo from My Green Mattress. It is firm, but could be topped with a softer bamboo or cotton topper.
Are there any options you’ve come across independently that you’d like us to review with you?

Are there really no soft, low VOC hypoallergenic mattresses?
I haven’t had good luck with mattress pads and I don’t think it would be a good idea to buy something firm. I have found that firm mattresses are also much hotter which is very difficult to deal with. I have a cooling pad and comforter and I am still struggling to stay cool. Are there any soft mattresses that have no latex but maybe have lanolin free wool? Or can you think of my other options?
This company is not one of our Trusted Members, so I can’t speak to the durability of their product or the transparency of their company but this is a 100% cotton mattress with some organic components that is also available in a medium-plush model. They also claim to be made in the USA from US components.
I am sure there are a couple other options out there as well.
