Disposal of Old Traditional Mattress

Looking to purchase our first memory foam mattress online and I’m wondering how people are disposing of their current mattresses? Thanks.

Hi Rockfish,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum!

Most consumers check with their local municipality or garbage collectors for information on how to have their old mattresses picked up. If you live in California, brick and mortar stores that engage in home delivery are required to offer old mattress set pick up (at no cost in addition to the usual delivery fee). Rhode Island and Connecticut also have similar mattress recycling programs in place.

You may also wish to check out local recycling centers to see if they accept mattresses, or visit https://www.byebyemattress.com/. It’s a site from the Better Sleep Council where you may enter your zip code to look for mattress recycling facilities in your area. You can also read more about mattress recycling at http://www.mattressrecyclingcouncil.org/.

If you are having your new mattress delivered with “White Glove” delivery services, you may wish to contact the last-mile delivery company, as many of them will haul away your old mattress for a fee.

If your old mattress is still clean and in good working order, you may wish to look for a local charitable group or church who will donate your old set to someone in need. Some people even sell their old mattresses on sites like craigslist, offerup or let go.
