All inside a 100% linen twill case that will also be quilted with wool. Will be tufting.
I was hoping to get a 4in 15.5g Quad pocket coil glue-free system from Texas Pocket Spring Co. I have been informed by Matan Wolfson that this is not possible for single purchase. All they seem to offer is 8in versions. Not even sure if these are glue-free? Does anyone have any suggestions? Another way to source one from this company? Or a company that buys large orders from them that would sell to me? I actually don’t currently see any single system purchase in 4in. Smallest is 6in L&P, which is also not glue-free. Feeling disappointed….
Welcome to the mattress forum! I’ve tagged some of our experts here who are a bit better plugged in and may have some ideas to genuinely help you get your hands on what you’re looking for.
And of course, if any of our experienced DIYers can chime in with their thoughts, I certainly hope they will!
Yes that is correct! Those are the layers. The coils would be in the center and both sides would be the same so I can flip the mattress. This is how mattresses are made in Europe and it’s a much better system. However, the coils are the only problem I have at the moment. I really like the Texas Pocket Coils quad 1 without glue. I was told they would not sell a single set of coils in 4in. Their retail store only offers 8in versions. That would make my total mattress height 12in. I want it to be 8ish. I honestly cannot find another company on the net selling a 4in core support coil. I have seen people asking for them on this site before. I’m surprised Texas Pocket Springs don’t make use of the hole in the market and offer 4in coils on their retail site.
Yes unfortunately the 4" base coil just isn’t very popular in he US. 5" and 6" are used for similar builds. I can tell yo that you would never need to flip a QuadCoil unit. they wont lose height or pushback. we’ve opened rolls that were compressed for size years and they lost very little pushback.
5” glue-free Quad 1 would also work fine. 6in glue-free at last resort. But nobody is retailing those systems either. Only 6in glued coil support systems. I do not want a glued pocket coil system, and 8in glue-free is not going to work due to height. I can buy a mattress with that type of coil. Point of making my own mattress was to use better components and keep the total mattress height to 8-9in.
Does Texas Pocket Spring sell 5in or 6in glue-free full-sized bed coils to anyone that I could buy one coil system from?
Not currently. the current Glue Free unit is 8". its a very popular coil so the machines are all dialed in to that height. there is a lot of precision involved in te production so changing the coil geometry isn’t worth the production at this point. The new Gen E Glue Free assembler which is on the production floor being tested now, will make it much easier to run different size coils, but it will be at least 6 months before mattress companies have access to coils made from GenE
Ugg… I don’t think I can wait. Good to know!! I wonder if I fully understand the difference.
The glue free coil system is sonic welded in the quad format instead of glue, no skrim. Are the glued coil systems part sonic welded and some glue?
What is the difference between your glued quad coil system and a conventional glued coil from L&P? No need for a glued skrim? So it’s less glue, but still using glue between the coils?
Hi MVK - I was just watching a tear-down thread on the Saatva Classic on youtube, and it turns out that there is a 4" individually coil that this bed uses as an intermediate layer, and the same or similar set of coils is also widely used as a base layer in beds that need to be thin, for example in RV’s or boats. It has 800-some coils of 15 gauge wire in queen size. Maybe the company that does the video would be willing to sell you a set. Or maybe there is a company closer to you that does custom builds of this type of mattress. Just a thought if you can’t find it some other way. I have no idea if they use glue, though.
All pocketcoils are sonic welded when the rows or strips of coils are produced. That’s step one, The next step is the assembly of the rows/strips of coils to make a finished unit. Unlike any other pocket coil ours has the next step of sonically welding two rows together to form the “QuadCoil” construction. The next step is we “heat” (not sonic) two quads together to build a finished unit. Every other pocket coil producer glues strips of coils together.
It sounds like you’re facing some challenges finding the right coil system. Since Texas Pocket Spring Co. doesn’t offer single purchases of a 4-inch system, you might want to explore a few alternatives. Check out other companies like Flexus Comfort or FilMaterials, which may offer custom solutions or smaller batch purchases. Online marketplaces like eBay or Alibaba sometimes feature smaller quantities from various suppliers too. You could also consider reaching out to local mattress makers or upholsterers, as they might have access to or knowledge of other sources. Good luck with your DIY project!
