DIY advice needed for broke college student

Hello, I am a 6’0 140lb mostly side but often back sleeper. I am moving next month and am looking to build a DIY Queen sized mattress with a budget of around $500. I am not a very picky sleeper at all but I do have some specific concerns.

As for my mattress history, I have been sleeping on a dirt cheap Sleepy’s Basic Foam Mattress from Mattress Firm for about half a year and I like the firmness of it as it feels more supportive for my posture but it has lost all support in the center which I suppose is as expected from a 6 inch $150 foam mattress. For a few years prior to that, I slept on a cheap Zinus 12 inch memory foam mattress from Amazon. I really liked how comfy and soft it was, but I would occasionally notice some back discomfort when I would sink into the bed excessively.

Hopefully this mattress can feel somewhat soft and comfy like the Zinus, but also a bit more supportive like the firmer one from Mattress Firm.

I don’t have any concerns about being a hot sleeper, or about needing strong edges, or about how it feels getting out of the bed. For me, my main concerns would be support durability and noise. I have dealt with issues of bed squeaking while with my gf time and time again and I am simply going to fix it with this new sleeping system hopefully.

I understand that it is mainly my bed frame doing the squeaking, but I would need a mattress that is good with a solid foundation as I am going to just have it on the floor until I can afford a bed frame/foundation that can hopefully not be so noisy. I suppose I am also asking about which forms of foundation would be a good balance of cheap/not noisy. I fear with the cheaper wooden slat bed frames that the lower quality of materials will lead to more and more noise like I am currently dealing with. I also used to use a metal wire grid type of bed frame that also had lots of noise when moving around.

I am interested in latex being a part of it but understand that it is probably out of my price range. Any recommendations of a basic supportive but comfy DIY mattress for a 6ft 140lb male around $500 or under would be greatly appreciated. And any advice with the noise situation and how that can be alleviated with the foundation/bedframe is greatly needed as well.

Thank you

I’m sorry but we don’t have anything close to that price range and I simply will not recommend anything with memory foam. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

Hi brokeandneedadvice,

Sorry that you are in this predicament. Most mattresses out there in this price range for a queen is not going to provide you with the support you are going to want and need.
I have two suggestions that are pre-built mattresses that are close to your price.
Engineered Sleep Today Mattress
(ES Promo TMU)
and

DLX Essential with the extra discount available via TMU (TMU MUGster Promo)

Quality latex mattresses as @Arizona_Premium stated are going to be a very tall order. A queen mattress cover is $300 alone, before you even talk about that latex layers.

I would suggest you take a peek at the two mattresses listed.

At least you know you will be getting a quality, supportive, USA made and manufactured mattress that will be far superior to anything on Amazon or in the stores.

Thank you so much, those recommendations look great, I appreciate it.

You might want to check out the latex and foam Hybrid from Foam Sweet Foam - https://foamsweetfoam.com/product/latex-hybrid-foam-mattress/

It’s $569.05 after the 5% advertised discount and there’s no charge for shipping or sales tax.
