Hello, this is my first attempt at a DIY mattress and I would like some critique on a latex build. First off, I actually don’t even know if latex is right for me but I’m not able to test at local stores for various reasons. Some information on me: 5’10, 180 lbs, fairly broad shoulders, about 70/30 split between back and side sleeping. I dislike the hammock feel where it feels like my back is arched into the mattress, but I also want to relieve pressure points otherwise I toss and turn a lot. I’d say I prefer a Medium to Medium/Firm feel.
I’m thinking about sourcing completely from SleepEZ as I like their transparency and customer service. From top to bottom:
3" Soft Talalay 19-22 ILD
3" Medium Dunlop 30-32 ILD
3" Firm Dunlop 37-40 ILD
3" Firm Dunlop 37-40 ILD
Cover: none yet, but prefer as cool/breathable as possible. Any suggestions?
I’m not opposed to a memory foam comfort layer either but I worry it might be too hot for me.
Please feel free to pick this apart as much as possible and thanks for any advice!
That’s too bad you aren’t able to first test a latex mattress in your area to at least give you a better sense on how it would feel. If you haven’t already, I’d just recommend a very detailed conversation over the phone with SleepEZ on your situtation and letting them know of any physical/health issues you might have and also what mattresses you’ve maybe liked or disliked in the past. That way you would have a much better chance of having success. Since you haven’t tried or even know if latex is right for you, you might want to consider buying one of their mattresses that offer a 90 day return policy for just that extra peace of mind and insurance.
SleepEZ is a great company to deal with. I actually just finished building a mattress from them two weeks ago today.
Unless you have someone else sleeping with you that is much heavier, I don’t think you really need to have two 3" Firm Dunlop layers. One should be enough as your base support core, unless you just want a taller mattress for some reason.
In terms of covers that they offer - organic and natural cotton/wool covers. Both will be very breathable with them being 100% cotton and wool filling. I personally went with the natural cotton version myself since it was much cheaper. Both are organic cotton by the way, it’s just the wool inside that is slightly different between the two of them (Joma vs Eco Wool).
The configuration you described otherwise sounds like it could work for you. Although again talk to SleepEZ about it and see what they have to say since they have way more experience and knowledge with whats been most successful for a very wide range of people.
