DIY Hybrid Coils and build

For about a year, I’ve been going back and forth between doing a DIY and buying an already built mattress sold in stores. I want to try a latex and have tested out a few. Based on those experiences and some research, I’ve finally decided that I want to build a hybrid latex. I am not trying to decide on the coils. Arizona Mattress Company has 8" Combi-Zone pocket coils only and Sleep on Latex has 6" pocketed coils. I definitely want the edge support and I think I like the higher coils, but I’m not sure if the combi-zone will be too firm. Here’s my specs:

175 lbs, 5’6" side/back sleeper. I usually start on my side but end up on my back. I have quite a bit of shoulder pain and lower back tightness that leads to restless leg syndrome when I sleep. I usually have to get up at least once in the night to roll out my back. I would love to find something that gives me the support I need, but doesn’t cause shoulder pain. I also have a tendency to sleep hot, which is another reason why I want to have the coils.

Another question I have is about the layers. I know I like the Talalay and I believe I want it in a medium, 28 ILD. For my transition layer, I’m not sure if I should use another latex or go with a Lux foam. One of the beds I tried and liked used a 0.75" Lux foam with 30 ILD. It also had a 1" 24 ILD Talalay, which I don’t think would be very supportive in the long run. Would it be better to use a Lux foam or another latex layer for the transition? TIA

You may want to check with Latex Mattress Factory on the 8 inch coils, even though they are only advertising the 6 inch on their site. I’d suggest giving them a call or email to see if they have the 8s.

If you get a softer coil, you may not need a transition layer. You could get the 3 inches and put them over the coils. That seems to be what a LOT of hybrid mattresses (Sleepez, Plushbeds, Eco Terra beds, etc.) are doing, and people seem to like it. You could always try that first, and then decide later on whether you need an extra inch of foam for transition or not.

Just a thought!

Good luck.

Thank you! I will definitely check with Latex Mattress Factory on the coils.

I am concerned about using just one layer of foam between the coils and the cover. I think what I liked about the mattress that had the 0.75 inch 30 ILD layer of foam combined with a 1 inch of 24 ILD layer of Talalay is that the 30 ILD layer provided a bit more support to the softer Talalay on the top that I also liked. Due to the back/hip issues and shoulder pain from side sleeping, I believe I need that support. This particular mattress was flippable and my guess is that is the reason that the layers were not as high - they had the same configuration on the bottom of the mattress. Since it’s a DIY, I don’t need it to be flippable, but I don’t know what might be comparable to the same feel.

sounds like an interesting mattress. Do you know the name of it?

Yes, it’s the Aurora Plush Hybrid at Lebeda.Mattress.
