DIY Latex Hybrid Mattress Questions

I’m a 5’7", 160-pound side sleeper trying to put together a DIY hybrid mattress instead of buying one pre-made. I previously had a My Green Mattress Natural Escape, which I took apart and kept the 8" coils from. I’m not sure I love the zoned support, but it’s probably okay overall.

In general, I liked that mattress, but I had two separate issues with it:

  • It always hurt my back when I sat up in bed.
  • It also developed deep body impressions within 2 years, which made it uncomfortable.

I realized that being able to replace the latex layer over time might help prevent the sagging issue. That’s what led me to explore a more modular, DIY setup.

Currently, I have a 3" medium zoned latex topper from Turmerry, which seems fairly close (at least on paper) to the latex used in the Natural Escape. I tried placing the Turmerry latex directly on top of the coils without a cover, but the setup felt too soft—my legs started to ache. I then tested it using a cover from an all-latex mattress I returned, and that made it feel firmer and more supportive.

Here are my questions:

  1. What size cover should I get, and where from?
My setup is basically 8" coils + 3" latex = 11", which matches the listed height of the Natural Escape. But that confuses me—how does their 11" mattress include a cover if the layers already add up to 11"?

  2. Should the cover be quilted or stretchy?
What are the pros and cons of each in a hybrid setup like this?

  3. What materials should I look for?
I think I prefer wool and cotton, but I’m a little worried about lacking a fire barrier. Is that something I need to factor in?

  4. Is there anything else I might be missing?
I’d love any input on comfort, support, durability, or details I might be overlooking.

With us the cover height is based on what’s going inside so if you have 11" of material you want an 11" cover. Our most popular Bamboo/Wool will add an additional inch to the overall height and our Organic cotton only about a 1/2 inch. Perhaps their cover is not quilted is my only guess or you are not getting the full 11" of materials. Our covers are both quilted and use stretch knit materials allowing them to stretch and contract and offer a much more structured finish and will keep the contents in line vs very stretchy covers which provide no structure and the materials can widen over time and edges be uneven.

Wool is a natural fire barrier already so no worries there. Either of our covers will firm up the overall feel just a bit. The Organic Cotton cover is made for vegans or those with wool allergies and uses modified Rayon instead which is formulated to also work as a fire barrier but without all the harsh chemicals.
