DIY Mattress - Advice Requested

After some time lurking on this site and checking out various mattress stores in my area I think I’ve narrowed down my preferences enough to try my hand at a queen DIY mattress. This build is based closely on a mattress from a local mattress maker. The build that I tried utilized Legget and Platt 8" Quantum Edge coils (I believe), 1" of foam (not sure of the specs), Texas Pocket Coil 3" QuadMinis, 2" of soft latex (not sure if Dunlop or Talalay), and then a quilted cotton cover with roughly 1" of foam (not sure of the exact composition). I liked this mattress the most out of many that I tried and am hoping to come close to it. Below is my proposed build:

I’m hoping to get some insight from those who are more experienced than me as to whether this seems like a reasonable build.

Some info about me: 5’9" at 165lbs, mostly sleep side and back

My mattress foundation is similar to the Terra Mattress Foundation ( Terra Mattress Foundation - Mattress Foundations)

Thanks in advance for any input.

I’ll follow up with a few questions that I have that I’m hoping someone can help answer:

  1. Do I need the bottom layer of foam? My foundation has roughly 2" between slats, so I’m not sure if this layer beneath the Quad Coils is necessary for better support of the coils, or if it will just reduce breathability.

  2. Should I add a layer of scrim between the two coil layers or between the QuadMinis and the latex above? I’ve seen some folks say a layer between coils and latex is necessary to prevent wear on the latex, but I’m not sure if this is true. If scrim (or some other separating layer) is necessary, does anyone have a recommendation?

  3. I’m hoping that the top layer of super soft foam will provide a small amount of ‘sink in’ feeling on top of the latex and that it will be similar to what some companies use in their quilted cover layer. It’s a pretty cheap, low-grade foam that I figure I can replace as needed if it collapses. Any thoughts on this plan?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Here is a short answer for #1 but i sent you dm with my number as with some questions (2 and 3) its easier to discuss over the phone (too much typing) since there is a lot more detail. Always glad to help.

  1. If you have slats with 2” gaps it’s always nice to have something solid under the coils…nothing expensive just something to prevent anything from slipping between the gaps. Most likely not an issue with our cover as it’s pretty thick, but it can happen
The best thing I’ve seen a DiYer use is peg board, gave it better air flow. Foam is horrible for airflow.

So after a bit more thinking and reading posts of others who have gone down the route of DIY, I’m wondering if the following would be a better setup than what I proposed above:

The support/transition coils would be combined in their own cover:

Pocket Coil Store Organic Cotton Cover (11")
Pocket Coil Store QuadMini (3")
Pocket Coil Store Quad Coils - 15.5 Firm Sides (8")

The comfort layer would be in their own separate cover and stacked on the coils:

Organic cotton cover from Latex Mattress Factory (3")
3/4" Wool batting from Sonoma Wool Company
2" Soft Latex Topper from SleepOnLatex

I’m hoping this build will be more breathable than what I posted above while maintaining a good amount of adjustability. It seems like I could also add some pegboard underneath the coils to give them more stability if needed while being more breathable than a layer of foam.
