I have been sleeping on a commercial memory foam mattress for the last 6 years. My wife and I overall been happy with it but it’s time to replace it. The mattress layer recipe was 7" 1.8lb Polyfoam, 2" 5lb Visco ~12 ILD, 2" 5lb Visco with holes ~12 ILD. This created an 11" mattress. Photo of the mattress composition attached for reference, angle of photo skews making top look larger than it is but measurements are as stated, 7", 2", 2".I wanted you to be able to see the holes in the 5lb top comfort layer.
We’ve truly been happy with that setup but perhaps may have liked just a /little/ more pressure relief and my wife would like cooler if possible (but not a deal killer- just not hotter). In going through the process to replace the mattress, we’ve tried Helix (curious about hybrid), Novosbed Medium (2022 model), and Ghostbed Luxe 13". We had high hopes for all three and none of them came close to the comfort we were used to. Disappointingly so.
I’ve decided to DIY. At minimum it doesn’t seem super difficult to DIY the same composition we have. I have no idea where to source the 5lb Visco with holes (pictured), that’d be the only difference. But… Latex is here and I sort of want to try it…Money is not a factor in the decision.
Our likes and Characteristics:
Like: That slow memory foam feel and enveloping feeling
Like: Reduced Motion transfer
Like: Sleeping cooler (primary reason for Latex interest beyond longevity)
Dont Like: Springy Bouncy Jelly feel. Springs are out of the equation whatsoever and we’ll have to be careful with Latex in this regard.
Characteristic: I’m 245 lbs and 6’ 2", Wife is 5’ 8" and 175 lbs.
Characteristic: We’re both primarily side sleepers…Hip and shoulder relief is super important.
I’m leaning toward doing some combination of the following.
6" of Comfort and Transition Layers
5" Support Layer using 2.8lb Poly. (I’m fairly set on this - It’s inexpensive, solid and tried-true).
My question to you is, what layers would you suggest. Lets say, I order 5 different layers and settle on 3 of the 5. Knowing that we were mostly happy with the original composition above, I’d be interested to see what you think.
First pass for the 6" layer I’m considering, which I felt my be close to what I’ve had with Latex added to keep the experience cooler. I’m concerned about the bounce.
2" 5lb Visco (top)
2" 14 ILD Talalay Latex
2" 29 ILD Dunlop (Transition Layer)
5" 2.8 lb Poly (support)
I’ve also considered
2" 5lb Visco (top)
2" 5lb Visco
2" Latex of some sort, as a Transition Layer for air flow
5" 2.8 lb Poly
These at least are my thoughts. What would you think should be my 5 layers for testing?
Thanks in advance.
