My wife and I are considering a DIY mattress project after quite a bit of online research and mattress testing. We are mostly side sleepers and sleep some on our backs. I’ve been dealing with hip and shoulder pain from our current mattress which is too firm. We are both on the lower end of the BMI scale. We liked a mattress at a local natural mattress store. It was all foam with 3 layers of talalay latex, 3 inch medium, 3 inch soft, 3 inch soft. We also liked the Silver Lake from Urban Mattress. It has a spring base with 5 inches of 3lb HR Cold foam (not sure of ILD). They had samples of the HR Cold foam. It was light blue and had a dense, yet soft feel. The feeling was a little like memory foam.
It seems pretty easy to find quality spring layers and quality latex layers online. I’m wondering if anyone has recommendations for quality poly foam layers. It seems like all of the online poly foam sellers do not list things like density or ILD. I’m looking for a soft HR foam that would be similar to the HR Cold foam.
I saw Bestway foam has some that sound interesting, but I can’t find any specs: Bedding — Bestway Foam
Do any of you have ideas about where to order soft HR Cold foam? Anybody have more detailed info about the foam toppers from Bestway foam?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Hi frhughes3.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum.
A DIY can be quite rewarding when approached with a sense of adventure! Because your current mattress is too firm, you could do a sort of semi-DIY in which you add the appropriate comfort layer in the form of a topper.
The mattress you tested sounds interesting! While I’m unsure where to find a source for the 3 LB HR Cold Foam you mentioned, there is this thread on soft DIYs for soft sleepers that may have some useful information for you in the DIY aspect. Hopefully someone else here in the forum can chime in with respect that the specific base foam.

Thanks for the suggestion!
Does anybody have suggestions for places to purchase dense, yet soft poly foam? It is hard to find foam density and support specs on the sites that I’ve found.
I emailed Bestway Foam to inquire about a couple of their poly foams. The slow release foam is 2.5lbs/ft3 and 16IFD and closed cell foam. The soft responsive foam is 3.5lbs/ft3 and 13IFD open cell foam. He said that even though the soft responsive foam has a lower IFD it can feel more supportive than the slow release foam, because the slow release foam has a more memory foam feel and the soft responsive foam has a little more bounce to it.
It seems like the density of their foam is much higher than others I’ve found online. I think this may be the kind of foam that I’m looking for. It only comes in 2" thickness. I am thinking about buying one layer first to test it out, then a second layer if I like it and need more pressure relief.
