Well I was just cutting off the very top of a tall purple harmony pillow insert to adjust the loft just a touch since the medium is too short for me, but that was super easy to do so I assumed cutting a layer couldn’t be too much harder with a large and sharp set of scissors. I haven’t actually tried to cut a layer though so I probably spoke too soon on that.
@PSS My partner is 5’11" 190lbs back and side sleeper should I get the 15.5g for her or the 14.75g?
.
I am a 5’7" tall 270lb side sleeper and I’m going to switch to the PSS 14.75g.
Also got a call from @Sleep_EZ today to change one of the medium dunlop layers to a soft talalay for no extra charge, very excited to lay on those. Thank you!
This is my old mattress a Sealy Kelburn II 523325, still feels nice but has always been a bit too firm for me (makes my arm fall painfully asleep with too much pressure on the shoulder causing lots of turning side to side). I am not sure the firmness or what the old mattress is made out of. I am going to throw one of the 3" soft dunlop latex pads on the Sealy and try sleeping on that tonight.
Any idea how to identify what firmness this old mattress is and what it’s components were? It may help me with determining pocket spring gauge, and maybe I need more firmness in the mattress but with a soft top layer?
I like the idea of building a DIY bed that I can swap components of as they age and fail so I don’t have to buy a whole new mattress again. Feels a bit like buying a PC and being able to throw in more RAM when you need it down the road.
At 5’7" 270lbs you need a 14.75g spring with one firm side. Yes that is a firm spring but it’s very important to make sure to have enough support. For your partner they’d probably do better with a 15.5g one firm side on their part of the bed.
From the AI research I just did the sealy has 15g springs. but the thing is that firm layers affect the way the springs will be compressed as well.
@Gc123 I think you may be right. I put one of the 3" aoft dunlop layers on the Sealy and it was the best night sleep I have had in years. I thought I needed a soft bed but maybe I need a firm or medium-firm bed with soft top.
Yep that’s the exact thing I experienced thinking, why not have a bed as soft as possible and the first time I laid on a helix sunset elite I was like wow that’s amazing cause it’s so soft. After laying there a few minutes I said “ew man this smushy soft feel is actually annoying” then went to the helix midnight luxe, which did not give that same “aah” feeling initially like the sunset, but I laid on it for a while and thought ohh okay that hold up and a little firmness feels better over time, I lean on the side of if you have to decide between support and pressure relief and can’t get it 100% perfect it is always better to have more support. Because the pressure relief is longer lasting due to your body being in better shape.
Called Sealy and they told me my medium Kelburn II postupedic hybrid (523325) has 14.75g 8" coils in it, with 4.5 inches of foam on top of that so I definitely gotta get an order in to PSS for some new coils for this EOS build.
14.75g for my side and either 14.75g or 15.5g for my partner’s side. Partner is 5’11" 190lb side and back sleeper.
I think she would do better with the 15.5g
Pulled the trigger on the PSS order, split king with 15.5g and 14.75g
I will update when they get here how it feels.
The Sealy Hybrid Performance Kelburn had a zoned spring unit, so the lumbar section has firmer springs than the head and the foot sections. It also has a smooth top, so your latex layer should fit nicely on top, versus if it had a quilted top panel.
Update on the current build:
Decided I did not like the quilted pillow top, it added too much firmness and I wanted to feel the latex more so I carefully used a seam ripper to remove the threads from the quilting and cut out the inflexible parts of the pillowtop layer. Top is now just one layer of stretchy flexible fabric.
Left side is Texas Pocket Spring 15.5g, 3" medium dunlop from SleepEZ, 3" soft dunlop from Naturepedic.
Right sidie is Texas Pocket Spring 14.75g, 3" medium microcoil from Naturepedic (feels perhaps a touch less firm than medium dunlop from SleepEZ but very similar), 3" soft dunlop from Naturepedic.
Findings:
The right side is too firm. I have a 3" soft talalay layer coming from SleepEZ that I am hoping fixes it. If not I may need to get rid of the 14.75g PSS coils for 15.5g PSS coils.
