Hi Phoenix,
I have ordered a latex bed and expect it to be delivered in the next week to 10 days. I will be putting the new mattress on top of a Comfort Select “Sleep Number” bed foundation which has a solid bottom. I had never heard of a bed rug until I read about it on this forum. Do I need one for my new bed? The mattress is from Arizona Premium Mattress and will be in a zippered mattress cover. I looked at the link you provided for a bed rug, but there is no price posted and there doesn’t appear to be a seller anywhere near where I live near Pensacola Florida. I searched Amazon for one but there weren’t any. Does anyone else sell these, and are they really necessary?

Hi gtwflorida,
I don’t think they are “necessary” but they would provide a more breathable base for the mattress which would reduce the risk of moisture retention in the mattress along with the risk of any mold, mildew, and dust mites. You can read more of my thoughts about a solid foundation in post #10 here.
A couple of places I know sell them is Savvy Rest here (if you click on pricing they are listed for each size), Ecosleepsolutions here (prices are listed).
One of the slat conversions here which has no flex at all or even one of the Ikea slatted bed bases here (which has some flex which may change how the mattress feels and performs) can provide good support and airflow under a mattress and are also economical.
Your mattress has wool quilting so there would already be some ventilation under the mattress and the odds of having issues are probably low but a bed rug would further reduce the risk of moisture accumulating in the mattress. It’s really a matter of “best judgement”, your sleeping environment, and your risk tolerance so it isn’t necessary but it can be a form of “insurance” if the combined risk factors indicate that you may be at increased risk and you don’t have a “compelling” reason to choose otherwise (such as in my own case where the benefits of having an adjustable bed outweighed any additional risk of having a solid surface).

Thanks, Phoenix. I will look at the sites and think about this. I will provide an update on my new bed after I receive it. I am excited and looking forward to a great experience, but nervous as well after reading so much here.

Hi gtwflorida,
As you know I think highly of Arizona Premium Mattress and I think you made a great quality/value choice.
I’m looking forward to your feedback as well when you’ve received it and had the chance to sleep on it for a bit.
Congratulations on your new mattress
