I’m going to purchase a new mattress (almost certainly an orthopedic firm model from the original mattress factory).
I currently have a semi rigid foundation/boxspring, which is in good condition. It looks like this:
The orginal mattress factory sells real box springs…would buying the matching box spring from them materially improve the performance or life of my new mattress, and if so is it worth the extra $350? Or should I just keep my current foundation?
Thanks so much for your help…this site is a great resource.
The “box springs” offered by the Original Mattress Factory (OMF) are 4-fold torsion modular systems. You’d want to check with OMF just to be sure, but I don’t believe that your warranty will be impacted using a firm flat min-flex wire grid network (make sure that yours is not sagging at all). However, realize that the torsion system will contribute slightly to the overall comfort of your sleep set, and using a non-flexing foundation with any OMF mattress will create a slightly firmer sleeping comfort. If you have tested a mattress on an “active” foundation, then it’s important to be aware that using the mattress on a non flexing foundation (or the other way around) can significantly change the feel and performance of the mattress and a mattress that works well for your body type or sleeping style and positions may no longer be as suitable for you on a different base than the one that you tested in the store.
Thanks…not a warranty issue in this instance, so just focusing on the comfort/possible longevity. Hard to know what to do… I always could add a topper if it is too firm, I suppose or add the box springs later, but I would get hit with an additional delivery fee. Maybe I should get the new springs, but its a tough call.
I’m mostly a back and stomach sleeper, with lower back issues, which is why I’m moving to a firmer mattress. And I’m erring on the firmer side with my choice,.
The warranty issue I brought up would be the potential for you to have no warranty on your new mattress if you didn’t use the torsion system box that OMF produces. That would be the reason for you to check with them before making your decision.
You could always go back to OMF and test the mattress on solid surface – even placing it upon the floor – to see if you enjoy the firmer comfort.
