This idea has something I’ve mostly heard of and read online, and not something I’ve heard IRL or have experienced. It doesn’t seem like my preferences have changed at all from when I was a kid. I’ve had mattresses for years at a time without my satisfaction levels changing over time, and I’ve never had a hotel bed that was uncomfortable to sleep in, and I’ve been at mostly average hotels.
Hi Oneechan69.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum and great question.
Mattress preferences absolutely can change over time, but that doesn’t mean that will be the case for everyone. In my experience, I’ve swapped between being a back sleeper, stomach sleeper, and side/combo sleeper. When I’ve had flatter sleeping profiles, I have preferred a medium feel to my mattress. However, when I was pregnant/sleeping on my side I preferred a softer bed. That said, after the baby was born I HATED the soft bed and wanted my medium bed back!
Now I’m side sleeping again because my toddler sleeps in the bed and I’ve found myself wanting a 1" topper to cushion all the gaps from side sleeping.
Sometimes, former athletes or people who have had an accident or surgery will find they want a different kind of bed to help accommodate new pain or pressure points.
It’s awesome your tastes have stayed the same. It definitely helps when you’re looking to buy a bed as you know very well what you want and like.
I look forward to others chiming in with their experiences, too.

I think many people change their preferences as their bodies change. I used to be able to sleep anywhere up to age 30- hotels, camping - no problem …
When aches and pain due to an auto immune arthritis started- I suddenly became very picky. As a side and stomach sleeper I get pains in my shoulder, neck and lower back.
For others it might be a change in their overall body shape … gaining or loosing weight, a surgery or simply those aches and pains related to getting older.
My grandpa lived to be over 100 and never found a bed that he did not like … he had a deep, restful sleep and the same mattress for the last 40 years of his life - there are those people too.
Thanks for sharing, flybear. My grandpa was similar. He could sleep on a rug on the floor and have the best sleep of his night.
