I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to go about setting up a thinner profile mattress. I really wanted to DIY my own hybrid mattress but with 6 and 8 inch pocket coils being the only readily available components I can actually buy, that doesn’t leave me with much room to make it work inside an 8/9 inch form factor. I’m 5’6”, 130lb, and predominately sleep on my stomach though I do occasionally shift to my side. Latex seems like the way to go if I want a smaller overall form factor so my thoughts were to go with all natural talalay layers: 3 inch firm support layer, 3 inch medium transition layer, 2 inch soft comfort layer with an additional 1 inch from a quilted mattress cover.
What I’ve been curious to know is if I could potentially replace the 3 inch medium talalay transition layer with a 3 inch quadmini transition layer instead. I was hoping to find someone who might have experience using 3 inch pocket coils as a transition layer on top of a latex support layer. Would this even work? Would it even be ideal? Would I need some sort of nonslip fabric to sandwhich it between the latex to prevent shifting or would a correctly fitted cover make that a nonissue?
Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Bradley’s Salt lake mattress seems to make a 7” mattress with a 4” coils, or 9” with an extra 2” latex layer. See whether you can DIY based off of that: micro coil mattress
I believe we may already be in communication, but I’ll also respond here so that TMU has a clear reference for future builds.
The QuadMinis were specifically designed to be used above our 8" unit. They generally do not perform as well on other manufacturers’ units unless those units include a scrim sheet. Our QuadCoil design provides a flat surface, which prevents the coils from settling into the base pockets.
Some DIY builders have used the QuadMinis as a transition layer. While I haven’t received direct feedback on those applications, I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t function well on top of a solid layer. They’re not intended as a base unit, but as a comfort layer they can provide additional deflection.
It’s also worth clarifying that the QuadMini is not a micro-coil. It is a true pocket coil, built with 18G wire and a narrower coil diameter. While it functions as a comfort layer, it offers the same performance benefits as a standard pocket coil. By contrast, what the industry often refers to as “micro-coils” are very thin-wire, 3–4 convolution coils sandwiched between fabric sheets. At Texas Pocket Springs, we don’t manufacture those because we don’t believe they add meaningful value to a mattress build beyond simply increasing coil count.
I actually haven’t seen this one so thank you for sharing. Reminds me of the 6 inch cape latex hybrid from custommattressmakers that uses 4 inch pocket coils. Just felt that these would be too firm for me though I also have no idea what gauge either uses for their 4 inch pocket coils.

I had posted this after responding to your email last night as I just wanted to see if anyone else has actually tried a similar setup with your quadmini as the transition layer on top of latex. Have done some more research after getting home from work today and I think I’m going to give this hybrid setup a shot. I appreciate you responding here as well!
