Dormeo Octaspring Mattress

Hi unhappywithdormeo,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about your Octaspring mattress.

It’s possible of course that the mattress wasn’t the best match for you in the first place and that you were “on the edge” of choosing a mattress that was too soft (so “normal” foam softening took you “over the edge” of your comfort and support range more quickly … see post #2 here). It’s also likely that the lower density memory foam in the top comfort layer contributed to the foam softening as well.

Dormeo would be responsible for a warranty claim (if there are any defects in the mattress or visible impressions deeper than the warranty exclusion) and in looking at their site Sleep Country only has a 100 day exchange or refund policy so unfortunately it’s not likely that you will be able to get a refund since your issues are a “comfort” issue not a “defect” issue.

Unfortunately … you are in a position that is very common where you may have believed that a warranty would protect you from the loss of comfort or support or indicates the useful life of a mattress when it doesn’t (see post #174 here).

I also agree with you that 50% off a list price that nobody ever pays is not particularly helpful although I would also keep in mind that they have no obligation to do anything based on your purchase agreement and their return policy so any benefit they offer would be outside of their requirements.

I am certainly no fan of Sleep Country (or any of the larger chain stores) or most of the mattresses they sell (see this article), but it may be worthwhile to pursue your request as far up the line of management as possible to see if someone with more authority can make an exception to their policies. I would take a firm, insistent, and “assumptive” tone but maintain a respectful and polite approach since you are looking for an exception and not for them to do something that they have any obligation to do.

While it may not be an ideal solution … post #4 here also has some information that can be helpful with a mattress that is either too soft or has developed soft spots (or virtual impressions). I would also check your foundation (or try the mattress on the floor) in case it is part of the problem and rotating the mattress 180 degrees (or 90 degrees if it’s a king) may also be somewhat helpful.

It’s also possible that your mattress may be suitable for someone else with a different body type or a different set of needs and preferences that may need a softer mattress than you do so selling it on Craigslist or Kijiji may also help you recover some of your investment if it turns out that you need to start all over again and aren’t able to get a refund or come to an agreement with Sleep Country that you are happy with.
