Dreamfoam Ultimate Dreams Gel foam mattress, six month update

Hello! It’s been a while since I visited. You all, especially Phoenix, were very helpful in my search for a new mattress and bed, and I’m back to post a little update since I’ve now had the mattress for six months.

Long story short, I’m very happy with my purchase. I got the Ultimate Dreams 13" gel foam full size along with the Sleep Master steel frame platform bed from Amazon. I also am using the Luna Premium waterproof mattress protector and some very nice soft jersey knit sheets. For me, this is a winning combination.

I should mention that the first week or two involved a bit of an adjustment. My old OLD mattress and box springs was not very supportive and had really had it many years ago. So, I think my body had to adjust to actually being supported properly. Occasionally during the first week or so I would wake up with a slightly stiff back. I was a little nervous about that, but it stopped happening and has not happened since.

There’s no question I sleep much better than before. I don’t wake up nearly as often during the night and when I do, I return to sleep quickly. I do find that I wake up a little more often if I go to sleep on my side than on my back. I think for hours at a time, the mattress is a more comfortable back-sleeper in my case. So, I tend to go to sleep on my side and sometime during the night, I’ll roll over and sleep the rest of the night on my back.

I have a history of lower back issues and I have noticed that over the past six months, I haven’t had any significant lower back problems. Even if I “tweak” it a little, I tend to feel much better the next morning after sleeping on my Dreamfoam. It’s really something, and I’m very grateful for this!

Some concerns I’d read about prior to getting the mattress did not turn out to be a problem for me–

I don’t find that the mattress sleeps particularly hot. It’s summer now and I really see no difference in temperature comfort compared to my old bed.

Edge support is just fine. I don’t feel as if I’m going to roll off if I get too close to the edge. I do sleep alone, though, so I don’t spend a lot of time over there. Occasionally my cats will take over the bed, and I end up on one side or the other, but so far no problems with edge support.

Too firm/too soft – Nope, just about right. Truthfully, it wouldn’t bother me if it was a tiny bit softer, but I think the combination of support/softness is about as good as I could’ve hoped for. I kind of wish I could sleep on it without sheets or mattress protector. They do firm it up a little bit, but it’s still plenty comfy for me.

Other notes… I love the free shredded latex pillow Dreamfoam sent! It is so soft and the stiff neck problems I was having are a thing of the past!

The Sleep Master steel platform is a fantastic value and I highly recommend it. It’s so sturdy and quiet as a mouse. Inexpensive, too! Plus it folds up so small should you ever need to move it.

I love the fact that motion doesn’t transfer – my cats jump on the bed in the middle of the night and I sleep right through it!

Overall, I think this mattress is a wonderful value. The only thing I can’t comment on is longevity, obviously. I am rotating it head to foot once every six months. Should a problem arise, I will come back and report.

I hope this is helpful to someone considering this mattress. If anyone has any questions, please just ask. Thanks again!

Hi locl,

It’s relatively uncommon for the members here (or anywhere for that matter) to share their longer term experiences with a mattress and I really appreciate that you took the time to share your 6 month comments and feedback about your mattress in such detail … thanks

Phoenix

Hi Loco, thanks for the update. I’m very close to pulling the trigger on this mattress. How did you get the free pillow? Did you order through amazon?

Hi spaumn,

I’'m not Loco of course but I can answer this

Like the other members of this site … Dreamfoam offers either a bonus or a discount to the members of the forum that purchase from them (as long as you let them know) and in their case they offer a bonus which is a free pillow.

This only applies if Dreamfoam fulfils the order and doesn’t apply if Amazon fulfils your order because Amazon isn’t a member here.

Phoenix

Thanks Phoenix! I remember looking for longer term experiences when I was doing my research and found those comments very helpful but, as you said, not very numerous. I hope my comments help someone in a similar position.

spaumn, yes, it was just as Phoenix described. I ordered through Amazon and I contacted Dreamfoam directly after placing the order to let them know I’m a forum member. The pillow came packaged with the mattress. If you get the mattress, I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Good luck!

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the update!

I’ve been following Dreamfoam reviews here and on Amazon and think I’m ready to take the plunge. Hoping for the best!

alanlau4 and dudem0n, you’re welcome. Best wishes!

I too appreciate the update. I’ve been following dream foam reviews on Amazon, SLD, and here for a short while but some great information. One question I have is seemingly there is no warranty… Have you experience any issues at all that would be a warranty claim? It is so difficult to feel comfortable purchasing a mattress online without lying on it first, but with the great reviews and the price point it very much seems to make sense. Thanks again 0P for the longer-term update, it really does help with this decision-making process

Hi Nv03M3, most of the mattresses from Dreamfoam and their sister company BrooklynBedding have warranties. According to the Dreamfoam website the 13" Gel Bed model the original poster was updating on has a 20yr warranty. You may have to contact them regarding 10" and 11" Gel memory foam models since the site isn’t clear (it just says they don’t include the 20yr warranty). However their warranty page here says their mattresses come with either a 10yr or 20yr warranty which would lead me to believe that the 10"/11" gel mem foam models carry the 10yr warranty.

Brooklyn Bedding has a 120 day trial period on their memory foam mattresses - if you’re unhappy, they offer to pay return shipping and store credit to make an exchange for no additional cost unless the exchange is for an upgraded item (then they charge the difference). If you go to the BrooklynBedding website there is an online chat feature and you can ask one of their customer service people regarding questions. It looks like Brooklyn Bedding is offering a July special - $100 off mattresses over $999, 2 free pillows and a free mattress protector for ‘liking’ them on Facebook.

You may also want to check the specifics of the warranty information which is a good idea for any mattress. They list foundation requirements you need to follow to prevent incidents from happening. There’s also a difference in warranty for Dreamfoam vs Brooklyn Bedding regarding memory foam. Dreamfoam warrants against body impressions 1.5" or greater. Brooklyn Bedding warrants against the same 1.5" for pillow top memory foam mattresses but for their flat top versions they warrant against body impressions .75" or greater. I know the Dreamfoam was the one in question but thought I’d mention Brooklyn Bedding since they’re a related/parent company. Even though their pricing is a bit higher, they provide more options with the comfort guarantee and on flat top mem foam they offer warranty against lesser body impressions.

Just keep in mind that their warranties are similar (if not better) than most other mattress warranties. Unless it’s severe support reduction or material failure, it won’t warrant against slight body impressions, typical softening of materials with use which is considered normal etc. If you carefully read the typical warranty of most major household brands of mattresses, they read similarly and a lot of times cover even less. Many times it’s used as a sales push (20yr warranty sounds great) and casually misleads people to believe that it covers any and all problems when it doesn’t. Not saying warranties are useless, but it’s not ironclad either. I.E., it’s easy to be sold on a bed with a great sounding warranty because it’s a ‘safe’ purchase and end up stuck with a mattress that has so much fine print you find it nearly impossible to warrant if you have issues sooner than later - v.s. a mattress with a more basic sounding warranty that you may never need to cash in on.

A lot of people (myself included) get caught up in warranty sales pitches and it can lead to making the wrong decision. Resulting in a problematic purchase that either has to be warranted far too often which is a pain or after reading the fine print can’t be warranted as easily as they thought. For instance my last (current mattress) is a Stearns & Foster innerspring pillow top. It came with a 25yr warranty and the salesman brushed over it leading me to believe I was making a safe purchase. Some time later, I had an issue with body impressions so I went straight for my warranty information. The real story was, it was an 8 or 10yr full warranty, the rest of it was pro-rated. It covered body impressions 1.5" or greater without laying on the mattress which meant since foam in the pillow top can spring back visually to shape, a 1.5" visual impression was more like a 3-4" sag laying on it. All of this was pointless anyway since a small amount of water had been spilled near the corner (and foolishly I had no mattress protector on it) which left a slight water ring mark. Warranty didn’t cover anything after that, so much for the 25yr warranty.

Sorry for the long winded addition, the intention wasn’t to go off track. Since you specifically mentioned warranty information I thought I’d share so you might have a more realistic expectation. If you’re considering more than one mattress, just don’t let the warranty be your final selling point. Actual user experiences might be a better gauge to go by. Best of luck finding a mattress.

Nv03M3, I don’t have anything to add to brass’s excellent warranty info (thanks, brass!).

As far as your question about whether I have experienced any issues with the mattress so far – no, none at all. I see no sign of indention, and I typically sleep in roughly the same spot. Chuck at Dreamfoam did recommend rotating the mattress head to toe once every 3-6 months. I already rotated it at the three month point, and I think I’ll probably do it every six months from now on.

Good luck!

Thanks for this post though this i have determined to buy a dreamfoam gel mattress.

calibg32,
Good luck to you! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine!

Hi calibug32,

I’ll add my congratulations on your new mattress as well

I hope you have the chance to share your feedback once you receive it.
